Overair’s Butterfly was a proposed all-electric eVTOL aircraft built around four large tilting rotors, variable-speed control and individual blade adjustments. Its “military heritage” refers to the experience and technology lineage associated with designer Abe Karem and Karem Aircraft—not to Butterfly being a military aircraft. Overair announced a full-scale prototype in December 2023, but that milestone did not establish certification or commercial service.
What made the Butterfly’s eVTOL design different?
Butterfly combined four large rotors that tilt between vertical lift and forward flight with a wing intended to support cruise. The concept was to use rotor thrust for takeoff and landing, then transition toward wing-borne forward flight. Overair called its rotor approach Optimum Speed Tilt Rotor (OSTR) and paired it with Individual Blade Control (IBC).
OSTR: varying rotor speed for different flight phases
Overair said OSTR varies propeller revolutions per minute to suit hover, transition and forward flight. The company described this as a way to improve efficiency, and said the system could reduce hover power demand by 60%. That percentage is Overair’s stated potential benefit, not an independently verified result from commercial operations.
IBC: controlling blades individually
Overair described IBC as a means of reducing vibration and propeller loads. In 2023, the company also said the U.S. Navy had made an SBIR award to further advance IBC. That announcement concerned the rotor-control system; it is not evidence of a procurement contract for Butterfly.

- Constructed with materials selected for demanding operational environments and extended service life.
Large rotors and noise goals
Overair said Butterfly’s four rotors were more than twice the size of those used by other eVTOL manufacturers, though its announcement did not provide an independent comparison set. The company also announced a 55-decibel noise target for prototype testing. That was a target, not a reported measured noise level in service. Overair’s earlier rationale for large, slower-spinning propellers and wing-borne cruise was that they could reduce noise and battery power draw.
What does Butterfly’s military heritage mean?
The phrase describes a development lineage, not the aircraft’s intended or actual service history. Overair connected Butterfly to decades of vertical-lift work by Abe Karem, founder of Karem Aircraft. Overair’s 2021 announcement described Karem as the creator of the Predator unmanned aerial vehicle and the A160 Hummingbird; Hanwha Systems’ 2019 announcement described Overair as spun out of Karem Aircraft and identified Karem as a designer of Predator A and other aircraft.

Those company statements support a connection through people and prior aircraft-development work. They do not show that Butterfly was designed for, acquired by or operated by a military customer. Overair proposed passenger, medical and cargo applications as well as possible military uses; proposed missions should not be mistaken for actual operations.
What was announced, and what did it establish?
Butterfly’s development milestones need to be separated from the targets Overair announced along the way. Prototype assembly and testing are not the same as certification, a production decision or commercial entry into service.

| Year | Announcement or milestone | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | Hanwha Systems announced an investment in Overair and a co-development relationship. It published a design specification of four passengers plus one pilot, a top speed of 240 km/h and range exceeding 100 km. | These were specifications published at the time, not confirmation of final or current aircraft specifications. Hanwha Systems, 2019. |
| 2021 | Overair unveiled the commercial design and forecast FAA certification in 2025, with commercial operations targeted for U.S. and South Korean markets. | The dates were plans announced in 2021, not evidence that certification or service occurred. Overair, 2021. |
| 2022 | Overair announced that its full-scale propulsion test program had begun. It targeted a first prototype flight in 2023 and commercial service in 2026. | The first-flight and service dates were goals stated at the time. Overair, 2022. |
| December 2023 | Overair announced assembly of its first full-scale prototype and said vehicle-level testing was beginning. | This establishes a prototype assembly and testing milestone, not certification or commercial entry into service. Overair, 2023. |
| 2025 | Archer’s annual report says it acquired Overair’s patent portfolio for a separate dual-use autonomous hybrid VTOL effort with Anduril. | The filing is evidence of later use of Overair intellectual property in another program; it does not say Butterfly was certified, produced or placed in service. Archer, 2025 annual report. |
Did the Butterfly fly or enter service?
Overair said vehicle testing was beginning after prototype assembly in December 2023. The available announcements and filing establish that prototype milestone, but do not establish a completed Butterfly flight-test record, completed certification, a production decision or commercial service. In particular, Overair’s 2021 target of certification in 2025 is a historical forecast, not proof that certification happened.
Archer’s 2025 annual report discusses certification progress for Archer’s Midnight aircraft and a distinct dual-use VTOL effort using Overair patent assets. Those milestones belong to Archer’s programs and should not be attributed to Butterfly.

Who owns or uses Butterfly-related technology now?
Archer’s 2025 annual report states that it acquired Overair’s patent portfolio as part of its effort to develop a dual-use autonomous hybrid VTOL aircraft with Anduril. This supports saying that Overair patent assets were acquired for a separate program. The filing does not establish that the Butterfly aircraft itself continued as a certified or commercial product, nor does it make the separate Archer-Anduril aircraft the Butterfly.
How should Butterfly be compared with other eVTOL concepts?
The most useful comparison is architectural and evidentiary, rather than a ranking of which aircraft is “best.” Butterfly’s documented concept used tilting large rotors and wing-borne cruise, while other eVTOL designs may use different lift and cruise arrangements. Overair’s OSTR and IBC descriptions explain its proposed rotor-control approach, but the company’s efficiency and noise statements remain design claims or targets rather than independently established comparative results.
