Oscar Piastri arrived at Sepang facing his first Formula 1 weekend at the circuit, unsure how McLaren’s strengths would translate to its mix of fast corners and long straights. Before the weekend began, he expected the layout to suit the car better than Baku—but said adaptation, strategy and weather could matter as much as outright pace. After qualifying on 3 October 2026, Formula 1 listed him seventh; that is a qualifying result, not the race outcome.
Why was Sepang a new challenge for Piastri?
Piastri had not driven Sepang before, making the Malaysian circuit a fresh test for him as an F1 driver. Speaking before the weekend’s running, he told Speedcafe: “I think it’ll be good fun. It’s a track I’ve not driven before so it’s always a new challenge.”

The circuit had also been absent from the F1 calendar for a decade. Formula 1’s circuit history records 19 Malaysian Grands Prix at Sepang, from 1999 through the last event in 2017. The 2026 return was therefore new for Piastri and unfamiliar territory for current F1 competition.
What did Piastri expect from the circuit?
Fast corners could play to McLaren’s strengths
Before the event, Piastri forecast that Sepang might suit McLaren better than Baku because it has more high-speed corners. “I think it should suit our car a bit better than Baku. There’s more high-speed corners here, which is good for us,” he said. This was his expectation, not a verified comparison of the car’s lap-time performance at the two circuits.

Long straights were a possible weakness
He also pointed to Sepang’s long straights as a concern: “There’s you know quite a few long straights as well, which is not necessarily our strongest area either. But I think we should be relatively good here.” His forecast was mixed: the corners looked promising, while the straights might offset some of that advantage.
Why might the quickest car not be enough?
Piastri described the weekend as “a very big unknown for everyone” because F1 had not raced at Sepang in 10 years. He expected teams and drivers to have to learn and adapt, with weather and race strategy adding uncertainty. As he put it: “I think it’s going to be who can work things out. Who gets the strategy right. Who deals with the weather. There’s going to be a lot of variables.”

That is why his comments should be read as a pre-event assessment rather than a claim about what happened on track. A car that appears well suited to a circuit still has to be set up and driven effectively, and teams must respond to conditions as they unfold.
What was Piastri’s form coming into Sepang?
His immediate backdrop was a difficult Baku result. Speedcafe reported that he qualified third but finished 14th after locking up on the second Safety Car restart. Piastri nevertheless described the weekend as a personal step forward: “Baku was the first time in a while where I felt that I was actually in control of things and able to be back at a level I’m happy at.”

That context helps explain why he saw Sepang as an opportunity to continue building, without treating his optimism about the circuit as a guarantee of a result.
What happened in Sepang qualifying?
Formula 1’s official qualifying results on 3 October 2026 placed Piastri seventh for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. This updates the pre-weekend picture: his remarks about Sepang’s potential were made before running, while seventh is his qualifying position. The cited results do not establish the race result.

Why was the Bahrain Grand Prix held at Sepang?
Formula 1 and the FIA announced on 26 July 2026 that the Bahrain Grand Prix would take place at Sepang in Malaysia from 2–4 October. The announcement described the arrangement as a way to preserve a Grand Prix that otherwise would not have happened. It put the event between Azerbaijan and Singapore and brought F1 back to a circuit last used for a Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017.
