Ola Electric Mobility Limited opened almost exactly at its ₹76 IPO price on Friday, August 9, 2024, but ended its first trading day at ₹91.20—a 20% gain. The rally made Ola Electric’s debut one of India’s most closely watched market events of the year, although it was not evidence that the electric-scooter maker had become profitable.

The company raised approximately ₹61,455.59 million—about $733–$734 million at contemporary exchange rates—making it India’s largest IPO of 2024 at that point and the country’s biggest offering since Life Insurance Corporation of India’s approximately $2.7 billion issue in May 2022.

Ola Electric’s 20% gain came after a flat opening

The headline number needs an important qualification. Ola Electric did not open 20% above its IPO price.

That distinction matters for investors interpreting the event. Demand was strong enough to produce a 20% first-day gain, but the opening price itself suggested that the market initially viewed the IPO price as broadly fair rather than immediately revaluing the company at a large premium.

Why this was India’s biggest listing in two years

Ola Electric’s offering was described as India’s biggest IPO in two years because of the amount raised—not because it delivered the country’s largest first-day return or had the largest market capitalization.

The comparison was with LIC’s May 2022 offering, which raised approximately $2.7 billion. Ola Electric’s issue was much smaller, at approximately $733–$734 million, but it was still the largest Indian IPO between that LIC transaction and Ola’s debut.

The final prospectus recorded an aggregate offer of 808,699,624 equity shares at ₹76 each, with a total offer value of ₹61,455.59 million. The offering combined newly issued shares with shares sold by existing shareholders.

Fresh issue versus offer for sale

Ola Electric’s IPO was not made up entirely of new money going into the business. Its structure contained two different components:

  • Fresh issue: The company proposed issuing up to 723,757,627 new equity shares. Contemporary reporting summarized this portion as approximately ₹5,500 crore, or ₹55 billion.
  • Offer for sale: Existing shareholders sold shares worth approximately ₹645.6 crore, or ₹6.456 billion.

Money from the fresh issue could be used by Ola Electric for the corporate purposes disclosed in its prospectus, including expanding cell-manufacturing capacity, repaying debt, and research and development. Proceeds from the offer-for-sale component went to the shareholders selling those shares, rather than directly funding the company’s factories or product programs.

This distinction is easy to miss in a large IPO headline. The offering did provide substantial new capital for Ola Electric, but the entire ₹61,455.59 million was not available for expansion.

What Ola Electric was selling to the market

Ola Electric was presented at the time as India’s leading electric two-wheeler manufacturer. Its core business was electric scooters, not electric cars. The company began selling its first electric scooter in December 2021 and was reported to have sold more than 330,000 units in the financial year ended March 2024.

Contemporary reports placed Ola Electric’s market share somewhere between approximately 39% and 46%, depending on the source, market definition, and measurement period. Those figures describe the period around the IPO and should not be treated as a current market-share figure.

The investment story went beyond selling scooters. Ola Electric was pursuing a more vertically integrated manufacturing strategy, including battery-cell production and expanded vehicle-production capacity. In theory, greater control over cells and other key components could help the company manage costs, supply availability, technology development, and product cycles.

In practice, vertical integration also makes the business more capital-intensive. Building and commissioning cell-production facilities is technically demanding, and the company had to execute across battery technology, vehicle engineering, manufacturing, quality control, logistics, service, and after-sales support at the same time.

The rally did not mean Ola Electric was profitable

Ola Electric was loss-making when it listed. Contemporary reporting cited a net loss of approximately ₹16 billion and an EBITDA loss of approximately ₹13 billion on revenue of approximately ₹50 billion for the most recently reported financial year.

Consequently, the 20% debut gain should be read as a market response to the company’s future potential—not as proof of an established profitable business model.

Investors were effectively being asked to value several expectations at once:

  • That electric two-wheeler adoption in India would continue to grow rapidly.
  • That Ola could defend or expand its position against established two-wheeler companies and other electric-scooter brands.
  • That battery-cell manufacturing and other integration efforts would eventually improve economics.
  • That production could scale without disproportionate quality, warranty, service, or working-capital problems.
  • That losses and cash needs could be managed until the business reached better operating margins.

A higher share price on the first day does not remove those requirements. It increases the market’s expectations that the company will eventually meet them.

The central risk: growth assumptions had to become operating results

One of the most important valuation issues was the expected pace of electric two-wheeler adoption. Ola Electric’s prospectus used an optimistic long-term view of the market’s expansion. Contemporary analysis citing Macquarie presented materially lower estimates for some fiscal years from 2025 through 2028.

The difference illustrates why growth forecasts mattered so much to the IPO. If electric scooters gained market share quickly, a manufacturer with scale could potentially spread fixed costs over more vehicles and build a stronger supply chain. If adoption grew more slowly, the company could face excess capacity, continued losses, and a longer path to profitability.

Neither forecast was a guaranteed outcome. They were competing assumptions about a young and rapidly changing market. Ola Electric’s valuation was therefore particularly sensitive to the assumptions used for future volumes, pricing, margins, capital spending, and competition.

Competition and execution remained unresolved

Ola Electric’s reported leadership in electric two-wheelers gave it visibility and scale, but market leadership at the time of listing did not guarantee durable margins or future share.

The company competed with established Indian two-wheeler manufacturers that had deep distribution, manufacturing, financing, and service networks. It also faced other electric-scooter brands competing on range, price, design, software, charging convenience, and reliability.

Its integrated strategy added another layer of risk. A successful electric-scooter company needs more than attractive initial sales. It must manufacture consistently, source or produce cells reliably, maintain product quality, support vehicles after purchase, and keep customers satisfied as the installed fleet grows.

Any delay in commissioning new capacity, difficulty in cell production, quality-control problem, supply disruption, or weaker-than-expected demand could affect revenue and cash requirements. Those risks were especially important because Ola Electric was still reporting substantial losses.

The IPO valuation was lower than earlier private-market expectations

The IPO valuation was reported as below the company’s approximately $5.4 billion private-market valuation in 2023 and well below some earlier targeted valuation expectations.

That reduction can be interpreted in two ways. For the company, pricing below earlier expectations may have helped make the offering more acceptable to public-market investors. For investors, it meant the IPO was not priced at the highest private-market valuation previously associated with Ola Electric.

But a lower valuation does not automatically mean a stock is inexpensive. The relevant question remains whether the public-market price properly reflects the company’s losses, capital needs, competitive position, and potential future growth.

What the debut tells us—and what it does not

Ola Electric’s first day sent a clear signal that investors were willing to support a major Indian electric-mobility listing. The company offered exposure to a large consumer market, a fast-developing vehicle technology, and a manufacturing strategy designed to control more of the supply chain.

The 20% gain also showed that the market was prepared to assign significant value to the possibility of future EV adoption and eventual operating improvement. The move was particularly notable because the stock began near the issue price instead of surging immediately at the open.

However, the debut did not establish that:

  • Ola Electric had reached profitability;
  • its market share would remain at the reported 39%–46% range;
  • its battery-cell plans would be completed on schedule or at the expected cost;
  • electric two-wheeler adoption would match the more optimistic forecasts; or
  • the company would produce attractive long-term returns for shareholders.

Those questions required subsequent financial results, production data, customer and service performance, capital spending, and evidence of improving unit economics.

Bottom line for the automotive market

Ola Electric’s August 9, 2024 debut was a landmark for India’s electric two-wheeler industry. The stock opened at roughly ₹76, then closed at ₹91.20, producing a 20% gain from the IPO price. The approximately $734 million offering was India’s largest since LIC’s 2022 share sale and gave public investors a direct stake in a major electric-scooter manufacturer.

But the listing was a market test, not a final verdict on the business. Ola Electric still had to convert vehicle growth into sustainable margins while financing battery and manufacturing expansion, managing execution risk, and competing with both established two-wheeler companies and electric-vehicle specialists.

The most accurate interpretation is therefore balanced: investors strongly welcomed the electric-mobility story, while the company still had to prove that its ambitious manufacturing and adoption plans could produce a profitable, durable business.
