NXP announced its Trimension NCJ29D6 automotive UWB chip family on November 28, 2023. The family pairs secure ranging for hands-free digital-key access with optional short-range radar: the NCJ29D6B focuses on access, while the NCJ29D6A adds radar sensing and an integrated MCU. The announcement is not new in 2026, but NXP’s product page currently lists the family as active.

What NXP announced

The NCJ29D6 was launched as a family, not a single chip with one fixed feature set. NXP positioned the A variant as a way to combine secure UWB localization and short-range radar in an automotive design; the B variant targets secure UWB ranging for digital-key access. NXP said the announced A and B variants were pin-to-pin compatible, allowing an OEM to consider a common board design across configurations. Exact current orderable suffixes and capabilities should still be checked against NXP’s product listing.

The family sits within NXP’s broader Trimension UWB portfolio. Its central design proposition is hardware consolidation: a vehicle platform may use UWB for secure proximity measurement and, with a radar-capable part, short-range sensing as well. NXP presents reduced component count and system cost as potential benefits, not guaranteed savings; the result depends on what the vehicle already contains and on its antenna, software, validation, and certification work. How UWB supports hands-free car access

A digital key system uses vehicle-mounted UWB anchors and a compatible phone or key device. The radio exchange lets the system estimate signal travel time and infer distance. Multiple antenna interfaces can help with antenna diversity and angle-of-arrival estimation, giving the vehicle spatial information to decide whether an authorized credential is actually near a door or inside the cabin.

UWB is not simply a replacement for every other radio. In NXP’s Digital Key reference system, Bluetooth Low Energy supports low-power communication and wake-up, UWB provides secure localization, NFC supports pairing or close-range access, and a secure element protects vehicle-access information. NFC remains useful for tap-style or backup access; BLE can handle discovery and communication. Neither alone provides the same UWB-based ranging and spatial awareness.

NXP describes centimeter-level accuracy and anti-relay mechanisms for its reference design. Those are system-level capabilities, not a guarantee for every vehicle or chip deployment. Ranging results depend on the complete radio and antenna design, installation, software, and operating conditions.

NCJ29D6A versus NCJ29D6B

Variant Core capability Practical fit
NCJ29D6B Secure UWB ranging for smart access and digital keys. Vehicle anchors for hands-free access when radar sensing is not required.
NCJ29D6A Secure ranging plus short-range UWB radar; NXP’s announcement also describes an integrated MCU. Access combined with possible cabin, trunk, presence, gesture, or intrusion sensing.

NXP’s current product page lists suffix-level variants including NCJ29D6AHN and NCJ29D6AHN-H for secure ranging, access, and radar, and NCJ29D6BHN and NCJ29D6BHN-H for secure ranging and access. The page distinguishes the “-H” entries by additional channel support. Do not assume that the 2023 family names map one-to-one to every current ordering code; compare the precise suffix and its documentation before designing in a part.

What radar adds—and what it does not

The A variant can support short-range radar applications beyond unlocking a vehicle. NXP identifies possible uses such as:

  • Child-presence or occupant-presence detection.
  • Kick sensing for hands-free trunk opening.
  • Gesture recognition and movement sensing.
  • Seat-belt reminders.
  • Intrusion alerts.

These are design possibilities, not finished features activated automatically by the IC. A production function needs suitable antenna placement, signal-processing algorithms, calibration, vehicle integration, and application-specific validation. Child-presence and intrusion functions in particular cannot be treated as safety-ready just because the chip supports radar. NXP describes the device as a multi-application platform in its UWB platform overview.

Technical capabilities and ecosystem

NXP’s current NCJ29D6 product page describes a single-chip impulse-radio UWB transceiver with IEEE 802.15.4 HRP PHY support and IEEE 802.15.4z BPRF/HPRF PHY support. It lists dual antenna interfaces, antenna diversity, maximum-ratio combining, angle-of-arrival estimation, combined ranging and radar support, an integrated Arm Cortex core, and a CAN FD controller. NXP also claims resilience to interference such as Wi-Fi; actual performance remains dependent on the implementation and environment.

NXP makes CCC- and FiRa-compliant all-in-one MAC software available separately. Its Digital Key reference design says it supports CCC Digital Key Release 4.0, as well as ICCE and ICCOA variants. These are ecosystem and software layers around the radio rather than interchangeable names for the UWB physical layer: IEEE 802.15.4z is the relevant UWB PHY foundation, while CCC, FiRa, ICCE, and ICCOA relate to higher-level specifications or ecosystem implementations. NXP also says its MAC implementations can connect with customer application software and simplify AUTOSAR architectures.

The LID2634 evaluation-board page lists UWB channels 5, 6, 8, and 9 for that board. Treat that as board/configuration-specific unless the documentation for the exact production suffix and regional configuration confirms the same support.

Security: useful ranging, but no single-chip guarantee

Secure UWB ranging can help a vehicle distinguish a nearby credential from one relayed over a longer distance, reducing exposure to relay attacks. NXP said the announced devices were designed to exceed ISO/SAE 21434 cybersecurity requirements. That is NXP’s design claim, not evidence here of an independent certification; ISO/SAE 21434 is a cybersecurity engineering standard, not a declaration that a chip cannot be attacked.

The security outcome depends on the whole access system: credential provisioning and storage, authenticated radio protocols, phone implementation, protected vehicle networks, firmware, secure boot and updates, and the OEM’s access policy. Multiple authorized devices also require explicit rules for which credential controls unlocking or starting. A UWB component cannot repair weaknesses elsewhere in that chain. NXP’s reference design illustrates a broader architecture that includes BLE, UWB, NFC, and secure elements.

What an automotive design still needs

The chip is a component, not a complete keyless-entry or sensing product. A vehicle program must engineer the surrounding system, including:

  • UWB antennas and anchor locations, which affect coverage, ranging, and angle-of-arrival behavior.
  • BLE and NFC components or functions where the chosen access architecture requires discovery, wake-up, pairing, or backup.
  • A secure element or equivalent protection for credentials, plus vehicle-network and firmware security.
  • Software integration, MAC-layer support, CAN FD integration, calibration, and testing.
  • Compatible phones, operating-system support, and a digital-key ecosystem that matches the vehicle implementation.
  • Validation in realistic conditions, including reflective or congested environments where multipath and interference can affect ranging or radar.

For programs already using a separate radar or presence-detection platform, combining functions may offer little advantage. Conversely, a design that needs access plus sensing may value a common hardware platform, provided it meets the vehicle’s performance and certification needs.

Availability and evaluation in 2026

NXP currently labels the NCJ29D6 family active, but certain NCJ29D6BHN package/order entries are marked “No Longer Manufactured” on the package and quality page. Family-level active status therefore does not establish that every suffix can be ordered. Confirm the exact part number, region, and supply status with NXP or a distributor.

NXP lists the LID2634 as an NCJ29D6 evaluation board, but access is limited to selected customers, requires contacting an NXP representative, and software activation requires a key. NXP’s Digital Key reference system is a request-based route for evaluating a broader BLE/UWB/NFC architecture rather than simply buying a chip. The older LID2580 page is archived and marked discontinued, so it should not be mistaken for the current evaluation option.

Public NXP material does not establish a universal unit price or retail buying path. The NCJ29D6 is principally an automotive design-in component, not a consumer car-key accessory; volume, package, qualification, geography, and supply terms affect commercial availability.
