If you mean a new, factory-built trail SUV in the US, there is no proven universal winner: the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and off-road-focused Ford Bronco trims are leading candidates, and the better choice depends on your terrain, configuration and daily-use needs. Their manufacturers publish impressive capability figures, but those figures are not independent head-to-head test results.
What makes an off-roader the best?
“Best” changes with the trail. Rocky, technical routes reward low gearing, traction aids, clearance and articulation. Sand and mud place different demands on tires, power delivery and vehicle weight. Water crossings make the specific vehicle’s rating and the crossing conditions important. Narrow trails can make width and wheelbase as decisive as a headline clearance figure.
For a useful comparison, start with the routes you actually expect to drive, then compare exact trims and equipment. Door count, tire package, axle gearing, differential equipment and transmission can all affect capability; a model family’s maximum figure is not necessarily standard across its range.
How do the 2026 Wrangler and Bronco figures compare?
The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications or capability claims for the US 2026 model year, not measurements from an independent comparison. Maximums apply to the specified trim or equipment, not every vehicle in the lineup.

| Vehicle and configuration | Ground clearance | Approach angle | Other published figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeep Wrangler, with available 35-inch tires; four-door model for approach figure; Rubicon for crawl ratio | Up to 11.1 inches | Up to 47.4 degrees on four-door models | Up to 100:1 crawl ratio for a Rubicon under specified equipment conditions |
| Ford Bronco Raptor | Up to 13.1 inches | 47.2 degrees | 40.5-degree departure angle; maximum water-fording depth of 37 inches |
Jeep’s 2026 Wrangler capability page provides the Wrangler figures; Ford’s 2026 Bronco off-roading page provides the Bronco Raptor figures. Ford lists different figures for other trims and packages. A single specification such as clearance or approach angle cannot establish which vehicle will perform better on a particular trail.
Which one fits your kind of driving?
Choose by the trails, not just the maximums
- Technical rocks: Compare low-range gearing or crawl control, locking differentials and tire fitment on the exact configurations you can buy. Jeep publishes a 100:1 crawl ratio for a Rubicon under specified equipment conditions; that number alone does not prove it is the better choice on every rock route.
- Water crossings: Ford publishes a maximum 37-inch water-fording depth for the Bronco Raptor. Treat it as a trim-specific manufacturer rating, not a guarantee that any Bronco—or any crossing condition—is safe. Verify the exact vehicle’s guidance before entering water.
- Sand, mud and mixed terrain: Compare the available tires, traction aids and gearing for the specific trim. The published figures here do not establish a winner for these surfaces.
- Narrow trails and regular commuting: Check the dimensions of the exact vehicle against local trail restrictions, parking and your everyday routes. The cited capability pages do not provide a comparative verdict on trail-width fit or road comfort.
Balance capability with ownership needs
Routine utility, comfort, servicing, purchase cost and local availability matter alongside trail hardware. The manufacturer capability pages do not establish which vehicle is better value, more durable or more comfortable, so those should be checked for the specific vehicles and market you are considering rather than inferred from off-road specifications.

How to make a fair comparison before buying
- Define your use: List the terrain you drive most, how often you commute, and whether you need a particular number of doors or everyday utility.
- Compare exact configurations: Record trim, door count, tires, gearing, differential equipment and transmission for each vehicle. Do not compare one model’s maximum-equipped figure with another model’s base configuration.
- Check trail fit: Match the vehicle’s dimensions and capability equipment to the width, obstacles and water conditions of your intended routes.
- Confirm local availability and ownership costs: Check the actual configurations offered where you live, along with purchase cost and servicing needs. The published capability figures do not settle these questions.
- Use the manufacturer pages for the final specification check: Jeep and Ford describe equipment-dependent figures on their respective 2026 capability pages; verify that the vehicle you are evaluating has the relevant equipment.
Is there a no-doubt best off-roader?
Not on the evidence available here. The 2026 Wrangler Rubicon and off-road-oriented Bronco trims are credible factory-built US trail-SUV choices, but the published figures are not independent comparative testing and do not establish a universal ranking. A more decisive pick requires a defined budget, new-or-used preference, primary terrain and local vehicle availability.
