No—BMW is not charging U.S. owners a monthly fee to use heated seats ordered with their car. In July 2022, BMW of North America said factory-ordered heated seats would remain available without a monthly fee. A separate ConnectedDrive service may be required for temperature-based automation that switches heating on automatically, but that is not a subscription to the seat-heating hardware.
What BMW said about heated seats in the U.S.
BMW of North America clarified in July 2022 that if a vehicle was ordered with heated seats, “that option will not go away nor be subjected to a monthly fee.” The statement addressed use of the installed seat-heating feature, not every software service BMW might offer for a vehicle.
BMW also said at the time that its U.S. Functions on Demand examples included Drive Recorder and Remote Engine Start for certain equipped models. Those software-based features used hardware already in the vehicle, and availability varied by market. That was a description of the U.S. offer in July 2022, not a guarantee that the same features or terms apply today. BMW of North America’s July 2022 statement
Why the subscription story circulated

What a ConnectedDrive subscription may cover
BMW USA’s current FAQ lists temperature-triggered “Climate Control Rules” for seat and steering-wheel heating among examples of smart interior functions that require an active ConnectedDrive subscription on applicable vehicles. How to check your BMW
- Sign in to BMW ConnectedDrive with the BMW ID associated with your vehicle.
- Check the Service Availability Matrix and ConnectedDrive Store for the vehicle’s listed services and terms.
- Distinguish a service that automates heating from the heated-seat option itself. The current FAQ’s climate rules describe automation; BMW’s July 2022 U.S. statement said factory-ordered heated seats would not incur a monthly fee.
What BMW’s 2026 comments do—and don’t—tell U.S. owners
In February 2026, BMW Head of Product Communications Alexandra Landers described starting with subscriptions for heated seats and steering-wheel heating as “probably not the best way to start with it,” according to TechRadar. The report said BMW continues to explore subscriptions for other digital features. That remark is context about BMW’s broader on-demand approach, not an announcement of a new U.S. heated-seat policy. BMW of North America said in 2022 that “Options like heated seats are ordered on over 90% of the BMW’s sold in the USA.” BMW did not specify the underlying dataset or measurement period, so this should be treated as the company’s figure rather than an independently verified statistic.
