Nissan also reported a maximum cabin-temperature reduction of 5°C (9°F). The coating remains in the trial stage, and Nissan has not established that consumers can buy it.
What does Nissan’s “21-degree” cooling claim mean?
The headline figure is a Fahrenheit conversion: 12°C equals 21.6°F. Nissan’s August 2024 report described the exterior result as up to 21.6°F cooler; its current technology page, marked as of May 2026, reports the same maximum as 12°C. The separate cabin result was up to 5°C (9°F) cooler.
These are Nissan-reported maximum differences against a traditionally painted vehicle in a side-by-side field comparison. They are not a promise that every vehicle, in every type of weather, will achieve those reductions.
How does Nissan say the cooling paint works?
Nissan says the coating contains a metamaterial with two types of microstructure particles. One reflects near-infrared rays in sunlight that would otherwise heat the paint resin. The other generates electromagnetic waves that, according to Nissan, redirect heat away from the vehicle through the atmosphere. Together, Nissan says, these effects reduce heat transfer through painted areas such as the roof, hood, doors and other panels.

This is Nissan’s explanation of the mechanism. The published material cited here does not include an independent technical paper validating either the mechanism or the trial result.
What did Nissan test?
Nissan began a 12-month feasibility trial in November 2023 at Tokyo International Air Terminal at Haneda. The coated vehicle was a Nissan NV100 service vehicle used by ANA airport services. Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd., Radi-Cool Japan and ANA airport services collaborated in the trial. Nissan chose the open airport tarmac to assess the coating in an exposed, high-temperature setting.

In August 2024, Nissan reported maximum reductions of 12°C in exterior surface temperature and 5°C in cabin temperature compared with a traditionally painted vehicle. The announcement does not provide a complete measurement protocol, weather record or statistical uncertainty. It also does not report a measured air-conditioning energy result, so the temperature figures should not be read as proof of a particular efficiency gain.
Is Nissan’s cooling paint available to buy?
No consumer purchase, factory-option or retrofit availability is established in Nissan’s published information. Nissan’s global technology page, marked as of May 2026, still describes the coating as trial-stage.

In its August 2024 Japanese announcement, Nissan said it had substantially thinned the coating from its initial 120 μm while retaining similar cooling performance; it did not state the resulting thickness. The company said it was considering special-fit applications for commercial vehicles often exposed to sunlight, including trucks and ambulances, and that further thinning work was underway toward commercialization. Those were development plans, not a confirmed product launch.

Nissan says a cooler cabin may need less air-conditioning run-time to reach a comfortable temperature. That could reduce engine load in a combustion vehicle or battery draw in an EV. These are expected benefits, not quantified trial results: Nissan has not provided a fuel- or electricity-savings figure or an EV-range gain for this coating.
