Nissan says production ended after the 2023 model year. The official sources available establish several important milestones, but not a complete, verified model-year span or technical-change list for all eight generations; the timeline below separates what Nissan confirms from what still needs to be checked against the specific car’s year and documentation.
How to read the Maxima timeline
This article follows the U.S. nameplate timeline. Nissan’s global heritage history uses a different framing: it traces the Maxima lineage through the Bluebird and dates the first-generation PU11 launch to October 17, 1984. Nissan says the Maxima became an independent series with the J30 model change on October 21, 1988. Those global lineage dates are not U.S. model-year ranges and should not be substituted for the U.S. debut.
Nissan’s U.S. retrospective identifies the 2016 Maxima as the eighth generation, but the official sources cited here do not establish exact model-year spans and major engineering changes for every generation. Rather than fill the gaps with estimates, this timeline gives the sourced milestones and flags the limits.
Nissan Maxima generations and confirmed milestones
1981: The Maxima name debuts in the United States
Nissan’s heritage retrospective identifies the 1981 Datsun 810 Maxima as the first model to wear the Maxima name. It was technically a second-generation Datsun 810; Nissan says the 810 badging was removed for the 1982 model year. That distinction explains why some histories describe the Maxima’s beginnings through the 810 rather than treating it as a wholly separate model from its first appearance.

1989: The third generation and “4-Door Sports Car” identity
Nissan dates the third generation to the 1989 model and says the “4-Door Sports Car” description was coined with that generation—not at the nameplate’s 1981 debut. Nissan’s global heritage account separately places the J30’s transition to an independent series in 1988, a global model-change date rather than a U.S. model-year label.
2000: The fifth generation arrives
Nissan’s 40-year retrospective says the fifth generation was introduced in 2000. For the 2002 model year, Nissan reports that the VQ35 V6 was rated at 255 horsepower. That figure describes the 2002 update, not every fifth-generation Maxima.

2016: The eighth generation
Nissan identifies the 2016 model as the eighth generation. Its 2015 retrospective calls it the eighth generation of the “4-Door Sports Car,” while noting that the phrase dates to the 1989 third-generation model.
2023: Final production year
Nissan USA identifies 2023 as the final production year for the Maxima in the United States. The 2023 brochure provides a concrete reference point for the final model year, but its specifications should not be projected backward onto earlier generations.

What the final-year Maxima offered
Nissan’s U.S. 2023 brochure lists three trims—SV, SR and Platinum. Each used a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 rated at 300 hp and 261 lb-ft, with front-wheel drive and an Xtronic CVT. Nissan lists EPA fuel-economy estimates of 20 mpg city, 30 highway and 24 combined for all three trims.
| 2023 U.S. trim | Engine and output | Drivetrain and transmission | EPA estimate (city/highway/combined) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SV | 3.5-liter V6; 300 hp, 261 lb-ft | Front-wheel drive; Xtronic CVT | 20/30/24 mpg |
| SR | 3.5-liter V6; 300 hp, 261 lb-ft | Front-wheel drive; Xtronic CVT | 20/30/24 mpg |
| Platinum | 3.5-liter V6; 300 hp, 261 lb-ft | Front-wheel drive; Xtronic CVT | 20/30/24 mpg |
These are 2023 model-year figures from Nissan’s brochure. For contrast, Nissan’s 40-year retrospective reports 255 hp for the VQ35 V6 update in the 2002 model year; the two figures apply to different model years and should not be treated as a direct description of every Maxima in between.

Why there is no complete year-by-year change chart here
The Nissan sources cited here confirm selected generation and model-year milestones, not the full start-and-end years or key technical updates for generations two, four, six and seven, nor every refresh. A neat table assigning exact year ranges to all eight generations would go beyond what those sources establish.
For a particular car, verify the model year, trim and configuration using that year’s Nissan brochure, owner’s manual or service information. Nissan’s manuals and guides catalog lets owners select a model and year. Do not assume that controls, equipment, parts or repair procedures carry over between generations—or even between configurations of the same generation.

What this means when shopping for a used Maxima
Because Nissan lists 2023 as the final production year, a U.S. buyer considering a Maxima is shopping for a used vehicle. Generation labels can help orient a search, but they are not enough to establish a specific car’s equipment or service needs. Check the vehicle’s model year and trim, then consult documentation for that exact configuration before comparing features, choosing parts or following a maintenance procedure.
Quick Recap
- Use the model year—not just the generation name—to identify the correct brochure and owner’s manual.
- Confirm trim and configuration before relying on a specification or selecting a part.
- For maintenance or repairs, use year-appropriate reference material rather than assuming a procedure applies across the nameplate’s history.
