What Nikola filed for and when
Nikola used Chapter 11, a court-supervised bankruptcy process, rather than immediately shutting down through a Chapter 7 liquidation. The filing covered Nikola Corporation and certain domestic subsidiaries. It was intended to give the company time to market assets, manage creditor claims and request authority for limited operations while a sale process moved forward.

Why Nikola failed
Nikola’s collapse reflected several pressures at once rather than one disclosed failure point. CEO Steve Girsky told the Associated Press that “like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic factors that have impacted our ability to operate.” The operating figures reported around the filing show how severe the pressure had become.
- Low production at high losses: The Associated Press reported production of 83 trucks in one preceding quarter alongside an almost $200 million net loss. In the prior quarter, Nikola produced 77 trucks and recorded a nearly $134 million net loss.
- Rapid cash consumption: AP reported that Nikola had about $47 million in cash as it sought bankruptcy protection.
- Difficulty scaling a commercial-vehicle business: Class 8 trucks require manufacturing capacity, parts, field service, financing and fueling infrastructure. Nikola was attempting to build those systems for both battery-electric and hydrogen-fuel-cell products while production remained limited.
- Financing and sale uncertainty: Nikola’s filing warned that financing, asset sales, continued operations and recoveries for stakeholders were uncertain.
The result was a business with substantial infrastructure and support obligations but insufficient liquidity to keep expanding on its own.

How much did Nikola owe?
The bankruptcy filing estimated assets of $500 million to $1 billion and liabilities of $1 billion to $10 billion, according to Reuters’ 2025 report on the case. Those are broad court-filing ranges, not a final audited balance or a confirmed amount owed to each creditor.

The wide liability range means the filing alone cannot answer how much any individual lender, supplier, employee, lessor or customer will recover.
What happened to Nikola’s trucks and HYLA hydrogen business?
Nikola made Class 8 battery-electric trucks and hydrogen-fuel-cell trucks. It also operated HYLA, the brand for its hydrogen supply and fueling activities. At the start of the Chapter 11 case, Nikola proposed keeping only limited service, customer support and fueling available for vehicles already operating, targeted through the end of March 2025 and dependent on court approval and funding.

That proposal was a temporary bridge, not a guarantee of long-term factory, warranty or fueling support. Nikola warned that more money would be required after the initial period. The later liquidation plan and the company’s Form 10-K reporting that operations ceased mean Nikola no longer functions as the operating truck manufacturer described before the filing.

Owners and fleets should therefore distinguish between support that was authorized during the early bankruptcy period and any service available after the liquidation. Parts, warranty, software, fueling and repair arrangements can depend on assets sold to other parties, local providers and the terms of particular contracts. The bankruptcy record summarized here does not establish a permanent nationwide service network or a continuing Nikola-operated fueling network.
What happened to shareholders and creditors?
Chapter 11 placed claims and asset sales under court supervision. Creditors had to assert claims through the bankruptcy process, while the estate pursued sales and a plan governing distributions. Because the case moved to liquidation, recoveries depend on the proceeds from sold assets, the priority and validity of each claim, administrative expenses and any disputes resolved by the court.

Common shareholders sit behind creditors in the normal bankruptcy priority structure, so a filing does not preserve the pre-bankruptcy share value or promise an equity payout. The materials available for this article do not establish a final per-share distribution, a confirmed recovery percentage for creditor classes or whether every estate matter is closed. Those details can change with later docket activity or appeals and should be checked against the current Delaware case record.

Nikola had already become one of the most closely watched companies from the SPAC-era electric-vehicle boom. Founder Trevor Milton was convicted of misleading investors and later sentenced, according to AP. Nikola also paid $125 million in 2021 to settle a civil case with the Securities and Exchange Commission without admitting wrongdoing.

The bankruptcy resulted from the company’s inability to sustain operations and financing, as reflected in its cash position, production levels, losses and uncertainty over a path forward.

How to compare Nikola with another EV bankruptcy
Nikola’s case is easiest to understand when compared with other electric-vehicle failures using the same measures:
- Technology and product: battery-electric, hydrogen fuel-cell or both.
- Commercial maturity: production volume, deliveries, installed fleet and service coverage.
- Liquidity: cash on hand, operating cash burn and access to new financing.
- Capital structure: secured debt, unsecured claims, leases and government or strategic funding.
- Case objective: a going-concern reorganization, an asset sale or a liquidation.
- Customer continuity: the practical availability of warranty work, parts, fueling, software and field service after filing.
Nikola stands out because it combined two demanding truck technologies with a limited production base, severe losses and a case that ended in liquidation rather than a continuing operating reorganization.
