Rebuilt and remanufactured parts have been restored, but the labels do not guarantee the same work, inspection, performance, or warranty from every seller. Before buying, compare the documented process, exact fitment, warranty—including labor coverage—and any core-return terms.
What do the labels mean?
New parts
The FTC says new replacement parts are generally made to original manufacturer specifications, either by the vehicle maker or an independent company. The word “new” alone does not establish who made the part, whether it fits a particular vehicle, or what warranty applies. Confirm those details with the seller. FTC consumer guidance
Rebuilt parts
For products covered by the FTC’s Automotive Parts Guides, a part represented as rebuilt must be dismantled and reconstructed as necessary. Internal and external parts must be cleaned and freed of rust and corrosion; impaired, defective, or substantially worn parts must be restored to sound condition or replaced; missing parts must be replaced; and necessary rewinding, machining, or other work must be performed to put the product in sound working condition. This is a regulatory description for products covered by the Guides, not a universal checklist for every component or seller. 16 CFR § 20.3
Remanufactured parts
The FTC groups remanufactured with rebuilt and reconditioned parts as parts restored to sound working condition, while noting that price and quality vary. A more specific industry definition was agreed in 2016 by APRA Europe and five other associations: a remanufactured part is restored from a core using standardized industrial processes and technical requirements, performs at least equivalently to the original, is identified as remanufactured with the remanufacturer named, and receives the same warranty as a new part under that definition. That is an industry definition, not a guarantee that every product marketed as remanufactured meets those terms. APRA Europe’s remanufacturing definition

Used or salvage parts
A salvage part is a used part taken from another vehicle without alteration, according to the FTC. It is not automatically rebuilt or remanufactured, and reliability is seldom guaranteed. FTC consumer guidance
Why the label alone is not enough
In the United States, the FTC’s Automotive Parts Guides address claims that a part is new and representations about its condition, previous use, reconstruction, or repair. Previously used parts must be clearly and conspicuously identified as used in advertising and packaging, and on the part itself if it appears new. The Guides also address the processing behind “rebuilt” and “remanufactured” claims and prohibit misrepresenting who rebuilt a part. FTC summary of the Automotive Parts Guides

The terminology does not form a complete grading scale. In its 2014 review, the FTC said the Guides define rebuilt, remanufactured, and factory rebuilt, but mention terms such as used, secondhand, repaired, and reconditioned without defining them. In other words, a label may tell you something about a seller’s claim, but the listing and warranty are where you need to verify the actual work and coverage. FTC 2014 review
What process does a remanufactured or rebuilt part receive?
There is no single process description that applies to every seller and component. The regulatory requirements for a rebuilt claim provide a useful set of questions: Was the part dismantled? Were worn or defective components restored or replaced? Were missing parts replaced? Was it tested or otherwise returned to sound working condition?

Manufacturer-specific descriptions can be more detailed. Mercedes-Benz USA says its Genuine Remanufactured Parts start with an inoperative, failed, or worn core; components are disassembled, cleaned, tested, repaired, reworked, and/or replaced; and the assembly is restored to like-new specification and tested. Mercedes describes rebuilt parts differently: only components that may be broken or unusable are replaced, without complete disassembly and inspection. How to compare parts before buying
- Confirm exact fitment. Match the part to the vehicle’s year, make, model, engine, trim, and part number. Ask the seller to verify compatibility rather than relying on a broad model description.
- Ask who did the work. Look for the rebuilder or remanufacturer’s name and a description of the inspection and restoration process. Ask which components were cleaned, repaired, machined, or replaced.
- Check the performance claim. Find out whether the seller says the part meets original specifications or another stated technical requirement. Do not infer an equivalence claim from the word “remanufactured” alone.
- Read the warranty terms. Check its duration, covered parts, exclusions, claim process, and whether it covers installation labor. The FTC cautions that replacement-part warranties may not pay labor costs. FTC consumer guidance
- Calculate the full cost. Check the quoted price, any core charge, the return deadline and condition for the old part, and who pays return shipping. No universal core amount or deadline is established by the sources here, so use the seller’s actual terms.
Which type should you choose?
There is no condition that is always the best choice. The FTC says prices and quality vary among restored parts. Decide based on the specific component, the seller’s documented process, fitment, warranty coverage, and total cost. For expensive replacement components, such as alternators and power-steering pumps, rebuilt parts are examples the FTC has cited; that does not make any particular listing or product suitable for your vehicle. As a quick rule, choose based on what the seller can substantiate—not on which label sounds most reassuring. A clear condition disclosure, named rebuilder, specific process, confirmed fit, and written warranty make it easier to compare unlike listings.
