Autocar reported on 6 October 2026 that the UK is part of the brand’s third expansion wave, after initial Middle Eastern and North African markets and then Australia and New Zealand.
What has been confirmed about the UK?
The UK is a planned market for the revived Freelander brand, according to Autocar’s report of 6 October 2026. The report places the UK and Europe in a later expansion wave. It does not give a UK launch date, order-opening date or expected first-delivery timing.
That means the confirmation is about intended market entry, not a scheduled UK retail launch. UK prices, vehicle specifications, powertrain details, dealers, servicing and aftersales arrangements have not been announced in the sources available.
How the international rollout is expected to work
The reported sequence distinguishes launch markets by geography and steering configuration:

At the brand’s Abu Dhabi launch on 29 September 2026, Chery Group presented the international left-hand-drive FREELANDER 8. Its announcement said rollout would begin in left-hand-drive markets before expanding to right-hand-drive and EU-specification markets. It did not provide UK timing or confirm what UK versions will include.
What is the new Freelander brand?
This is a new vehicle portfolio built through a collaboration between JLR and Chery, not simply a new Land Rover model. In June 2024, the companies announced a letter of intent for JLR to license the Freelander name to Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR), their 50/50 joint venture. The proposed portfolio would use Chery’s EV architecture and be manufactured in Changshu, China, with China as the initial market and exports intended over time. JLR described the portfolio as independent of both Chery’s existing range and JLR’s modern luxury House of Brands. The original JLR announcement sets out the agreement; the later launch account says JLR leads design while Chery contributes technology and supply-chain capabilities.

FREELANDER 8 is the first named vehicle
FREELANDER 8 is the first strategic nameplate announced for the revived brand. The international left-hand-drive version has been shown, but that does not establish the specification, powertrain, equipment or price of a future UK model. Chery Group says further product information, including safety, interior space and service details, will be shared through official channels and local market communications.
Does the UAE launch tell UK buyers where to buy or service one?
No. The UAE was identified as the first international market. Chery Group named Al Tayer Motors as dealer partner for Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and Premier Motors for Abu Dhabi. Those appointments apply to the UAE; they do not confirm UK dealerships, servicing or aftersales support. No UK retail or service partner has been named in the cited announcements.

Is this the same Freelander produced from 1997 to 2015?
No. JLR says the original Freelander was produced from 1997 to 2015 and that the Discovery Sport succeeded it in 2016. The revived Freelander is a separate vehicle portfolio being developed under the JLR–Chery arrangement; the original model’s production dates are not the history of FREELANDER 8. JLR’s 2024 announcement also quotes then-CEO Adrian Mardell describing the agreement as a strategic step that underlined JLR’s commitment to China and complemented its existing business there.
