Newly reported rescue details provide a clearer account of the August 7, 2025, off-road crash that killed Canadian adventure creators Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans. According to details attributed to Kaslo Search and Rescue manager Mark Jennings-Bates, Yeomans was ejected from the vehicle and had no vital signs when rescuers found him. Tourout was still conscious but had suffered a severe head injury. She was flown from the crash site, taken by ambulance to a hospital and died later that night.

The available reporting describes a vehicle that left a rough backcountry trail and rolled down a steep boulder field for approximately 200 metres—about 656 feet. It does not, however, establish a definitive cause. Suggestions of rough terrain or a possible loss of control remain reported circumstances, not a confirmed finding.

Rescuers reportedly found the vehicle at the bottom of a descent through difficult terrain. Jennings-Bates said it had fallen roughly 200 metres down a boulder field. A separate account attributed to CBC described the vehicle as rolling “many, many times” during the descent.
The two occupants were in different locations when rescuers arrived:
- Matthew Yeomans had been thrown from the vehicle and had no vital signs when located.
- Stacey Tourout remained in the vehicle until it stopped and was conscious, but had a serious head injury.
Tourout was extracted by helicopter and transferred to an ambulance before being taken to hospital. She died later that night from injuries sustained in the crash. This sequence is important: reports do not describe both deaths as occurring at the scene. The later rescue account reported the condition of each occupant and Tourout’s transport.
A difficult rescue in steep backcountry terrain
The reported location created substantial access challenges. The rescue team had to travel uphill through rough terrain to reach the victims and the wreckage. Responders were nevertheless able to locate them efficiently after receiving an accurate position, according to the accounts attributed to Kaslo Search and Rescue.
The road section was also significant. Jennings-Bates reportedly described a rough backcountry trail and noted that the area where the vehicle left the road opened onto a steep boulder field. There were apparently no trees at that particular point. Trees might have slowed or stopped the vehicle elsewhere along the route, but that observation is context about the terrain—not an official accident-causation finding.

The consistently reported measurement is approximately 200 metres, or around 656 feet. It should not be presented as an exact surveyed distance, and larger figures such as 213 metres or 700 feet appear to be rounding or secondary conversions rather than a confirmed official measurement.
What is known about the cause—and what is not
No reliable reporting located for this account establishes precisely why the vehicle left the trail. The rescue manager said the exact cause was unclear. Rough terrain and a possible loss of control were discussed as suspected circumstances, but neither should be stated as a confirmed official conclusion.

- speeding;
- distracted;
- intoxicated or impaired;
- filming or livestreaming at the moment of the crash;
- wearing or not wearing a particular restraint system; or
- otherwise acting negligently.
That distinction matters in a fatal accident involving public figures. The couple produced off-road and travel content, but their occupation does not prove that a camera was operating during this particular drive. Reporting on the crash specifically noted that authorities had not confirmed whether they were recording content.

The channel’s official description says the pair built what they described as the world’s first Land Cruiser Chinook in 100 days, with the goal of driving the Pan-American Highway and continuing beyond it. Their videos covered Toyota overlanding, 4×4 travel, travel films and truck builds. Toyota World Runners’ official YouTube channel provides the channel’s own description of the project and its subject matter.
The vehicle project combined an older Toyota Land Cruiser chassis with a Chinook motorhome body, according to a pre-crash profile. Because that description comes from secondary coverage rather than a surviving engineering specification or official vehicle record, it is best understood as background—not as a definitive technical specification of the crash vehicle. The earlier profile described the one-off Land Cruiser-Chinook build.
The couple’s public relationship and final reported timeline
Tourout and Yeomans had documented their relationship and travels publicly before launching Toyota World Runners in 2020. Yeomans proposed to Tourout during their travels, and the couple described themselves publicly as engaged in 2024.
Their last reported Instagram post appeared several days before the crash and showed them enjoying summer on Vancouver Island. Their online presence had therefore covered a broader life and travel project, rather than being limited to the vehicle involved in the accident. A published relationship timeline covered their engagement and public history.
When the deaths were announced
The family announced that both Tourout and Yeomans died from injuries sustained in an off-road accident in the British Columbia mountains they loved. The first broad reports appeared around August 11–12, 2025. Additional details about the rescue and the occupants’ conditions were reported around August 14–17.

The family announcement is the clearest public account of the deaths themselves. The more specific details about the ejection, Tourout’s condition, the helicopter extraction and the approximate distance of the fall come from statements attributed by media outlets to Kaslo Search and Rescue leadership. The family announcement and initial reporting were covered here.
What the reporting supports
The established outline is stark but limited: on August 7, the couple’s vehicle left a remote West Kootenay backcountry route near the Trout Lake area and descended approximately 200 metres through steep, rocky terrain. Yeomans was ejected and found without vital signs. Tourout initially survived, was rescued by helicopter and died after reaching hospital.
The reporting does not support turning that outline into a more specific theory about speed, filming, impairment, restraints or a mechanical failure. Until an official investigation provides additional findings, the responsible account is that the crash occurred on difficult terrain, the exact cause remains unclear, and both members of Toyota World Runners died from the resulting injuries.
Their lasting public work is the overlanding project they built together: a highly customized Toyota-based vehicle, a Pan-American travel ambition and a channel devoted to remote travel and fabrication. That legacy can be acknowledged without assigning blame where the available evidence does not.
