The film is Leave the World Behind, a 2023 Netflix apocalyptic thriller—not a new 2026 release. Its self-driving Tesla pileup is part of a fictional crisis triggered by a mysterious cyberattack; it is not evidence that real Teslas attacked anyone.
What is Leave the World Behind about?
Sam Esmail wrote and directed the film, which follows two families as technology and public order unravel. Amanda and Clay Sandford take their children to a Long Island rental home. That night, G.H. Scott and his daughter Ruth arrive seeking refuge and report a cyberattack. As communication and other systems fail, the families try to make sense of a crisis whose cause remains uncertain.
Netflix’s official synopsis describes a cyberattack that knocks out the family’s devices just as two strangers appear at the door. The cast includes Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Myha’la, Kevin Bacon, Farrah Mackenzie, and Charlie Evans. The film adapts Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel, Leave the World Behind.
Why are self-driving Teslas crashing?
In one of the film’s most striking scenes, self-driving Teslas crash into one another amid the cascading failures. Netflix’s ending explainer identifies the pileup as one of the story’s technological breakdowns. The scene belongs to the film’s fictional cyberattack scenario; it does not establish that Tesla vehicles behaved this way in the real world or prove a claim about their safety.

The story does not settle exactly what causes every failure. Esmail told Netflix Tudum that he wanted to explore a disaster driven by a cyberattack because many people lack a concrete picture of what one could look like or how far-reaching its effects might be. The film uses the car pileup as one image of a wider breakdown, rather than as a technical explanation of a real vehicle system.
When did the movie come out, and where can you watch it?
Leave the World Behind opened in select U.S. theaters on November 22, 2023, and began streaming on Netflix in the U.S. on December 8, 2023, according to the Netflix Media Center release record. Netflix’s official title page lists the film, but catalog availability can vary by country and change over time; check Netflix in your region for current access.

What the ending means (spoilers)
The title comes from the rental listing that led Amanda to the house. The finale leaves the larger crisis unresolved rather than identifying one definitive cause. Esmail said he wanted to leave “breadcrumbs” for the audience without giving away too much. That deliberate ambiguity also means the film does not provide a complete explanation for the Tesla crashes.
Rose reaches a neighbor’s doomsday bunker and finds a physical-media collection. She watches the finale of Friends while the emergency continues outside. Esmail described that ending as “pure escapism.” The moment offers Rose a small pocket of comfort, not a resolution to the crisis.

Is the film based on a book?
Yes. The movie is based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel, also titled Leave the World Behind. The book is the source story for readers who want to explore the premise beyond the film; Netflix confirms the adaptation in its film overview.
