A naked bike can pair lively street performance with a more upright riding position than a fully faired sportbike, but “naked” does not guarantee a particular level of speed or comfort. The category ranges from lightweight urban machines to high-performance street bikes. The best fit depends on your size, roads, trip length, and priorities—not the style label alone.
What makes a motorcycle “naked”?
“Naked” generally describes a street motorcycle with relatively little bodywork and an exposed mechanical look. It is a broad category, not a specification: models can differ substantially in engine performance, weight, suspension, rider position, and intended use. KTM’s lineup spans from the 125 DUKE to the 1390 SUPER DUKE family, while Kawasaki describes the Z500, Z650 S, and Z900 as naked motorcycles.
An upright or less committed position may suit street riding, but it does not by itself establish that a bike is comfortable, easy to control, or suitable for every rider. Those qualities depend on the individual model and how it fits you.
How to judge performance, comfort, and everyday usefulness
Riding position and fit
Check how far you have to reach to the handlebars, where your feet sit on the pegs, how your knees bend, and whether the seat works for your body. Most importantly, see whether you can stop and maneuver confidently. A manufacturer’s description of an upright or roomy position is useful as a starting point, not a guarantee that the bike will fit you.

Kawasaki describes the Z500 as having wide handlebars and a relatively upright position, along with a cushioned seat and relaxed rider triangle. For the Z650 S, Kawasaki highlights changes to the seat and rider position; its page says the seat is 20 mm higher than the previous version. That figure is specific to the model comparison on the manufacturer’s page, not a general measure of comfort.
Suspension and the roads you ride
Suspension affects how a bike responds to bumps and changes in the road, but hardware and adjustment matter more than a category label. Kawasaki lists adjustable rear preload for the Z500. Its Z650 S description presents the horizontal back-link suspension as a balance of sport performance and casual riding comfort. Consider your usual roads and whether the available adjustment is useful for your load and riding conditions.

Power and experience
Do not assume that more power automatically means more enjoyment. Think about the way you plan to ride and how much performance you can use comfortably. In KTM’s 2026 range description, the company positions the 390 DUKE as a lightweight all-round naked, the 790 DUKE as a middleweight, and the 990 and 1390 models as more performance-focused. These are manufacturer characterizations, not independent test findings. Specifications and availability can differ by market, so check the current local model information before comparing bikes.
Wind and trip length
With less bodywork than a fully faired motorcycle, a naked bike may expose the rider more to airflow. How that feels depends on the model, your height and posture, speed, and the length of the ride. A rider discussion raises wind protection as a consideration on longer, faster trips, but that is anecdotal input rather than a representative survey. If highway travel is part of your routine, assess wind comfort on the specific bike rather than assuming all naked bikes behave alike.

Match the bike to the job
- Urban riding and commuting: Prioritize a manageable fit, control feel, and comfort in the kinds of stops and road conditions you encounter.
- Mixed street riding: Balance position, suspension, and power for the roads you actually use, rather than choosing on peak performance alone.
- Long highway trips: Give wind exposure and sustained riding comfort extra weight in your evaluation.
- Track use: Judge the model against your track goals and experience; a naked-bike label does not establish track capability or suitability.
Examples of how the category varies
These examples illustrate manufacturer positioning and descriptions; they are not the result of comparative road testing.
| Model | Manufacturer description or positioning | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Kawasaki Z500 ABS | Kawasaki describes a lightweight trellis frame, upright riding position, padded seat, adjustable rear preload, and standard ABS. | An example of an approachable naked-bike concept. Confirm local model-year specifications and assess personal fit; the manufacturer page is not an independent road test. |
| Kawasaki Z650 S | Kawasaki highlights roomier ergonomics and describes its suspension as balancing sport performance with casual riding comfort. | The manufacturer says the seat is 20 mm higher than on the previous version. Check which model year and market the comparison applies to, and try the seat and riding position yourself. |
| Kawasaki Z900 ABS | Kawasaki describes a sporty upright position and suspension intended to provide performance, comfort, and feedback. | A higher-performance category example, not evidence that every naked motorcycle will feel comfortable or appropriate for every rider. |
| KTM DUKE range | KTM’s 2026 release positions the 390 DUKE as a lightweight all-rounder, the 790 DUKE as middleweight, and the 990 and 1390 models as more performance-focused. | Equipment, model availability, and planned dealer timing can vary by market. Verify current local specifications and availability before deciding. |
How to choose one you will enjoy riding
- Define your normal use. Decide how much of your riding is urban, commuting, mixed-road, highway, or track riding.
- Set your own priorities. Rank fit, seat comfort, control reach, suspension, power delivery, and wind exposure for the riding you actually do.
- Compare specific models. Use manufacturer pages to confirm current specifications and equipment for your market and model year, while treating descriptions such as “comfortable” or “all-round” as positioning rather than independent conclusions.
- Check fit in person. Sit on the bike, operate the controls, and assess your reach and confidence at a stop. Where possible, arrange a test ride to judge its behavior on roads like the ones you ride.
There is no universal winner in the question of whether a naked bike or its sport counterpart is more fun. A rider discussion captures that preference question, but its comments are anecdotal. Your answer depends on the riding position and wind protection you want, how you use the bike, and which specific model fits you.
