The Mustang GTD Competition posted a 6:40.835 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap, 8.440 seconds quicker than the Corvette ZR1X’s reported 6:49.275. The times came from separate manufacturer attempts in different years, with different drivers—not a head-to-head test. Ford’s lap was set by Dirk Müller in 2026; Chevrolet’s was set by vehicle-dynamics engineer Drew Cattell in 2025. Both manufacturers identify their entries as Pre-Production / Prototype Class vehicles.
Mustang GTD Competition vs. Corvette ZR1X: the reported lap times
| Car and version | Lap time | Driver | Reported category | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Mustang GTD Competition | 6:40.835 | Dirk Müller, Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver | Pre-Production / Prototype Class; sixth on Ford’s reported class leaderboard | Ford Racing, April 16, 2026 |
| Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X | 6:49.275 | Drew Cattell, vehicle-dynamics engineer | Prototype/Pre-Production | Chevrolet, July 31, 2025 |
The difference is 8.440 seconds, calculated by subtracting Chevrolet’s reported time from Ford’s. It describes the gap between two individual laps, not a controlled comparison: the attempts happened in different years, the drivers differed, and the available accounts do not establish matched conditions. The Nürburgring’s record-process page explains that official record laps use a defined course and timing procedure; class and vehicle status still matter when interpreting a result.
Which Mustang set the 6:40 lap?
It was the Mustang GTD Competition, not the earlier Mustang GTD associated with Ford’s 6:52.072 production-class benchmark. Ford says the Competition improved on that earlier time by more than 11 seconds. The times refer to distinct versions and classifications, so the Competition result should not be presented as the original GTD’s production-class time.
Ford also reports that engineer Steve Thompson drove a GTD Competition lap in 6:49.337. That is 0.062 seconds slower than Cattell’s ZR1X time, but it is another separate lap, with a different driver. Ford says Thompson had driven the Nürburgring fewer than 40 laps cumulatively; that detail provides context, not a basis for treating the result as a matched test.

What the manufacturers say changed or powered each car
Mustang GTD Competition
Ford attributes the Competition’s quicker lap to hardware updates and tuning aimed at output above the original GTD’s 815 horsepower, revised aerodynamics, new high-performance tires and weight reduction. The changes Ford describes include a modified rear wing, secondary front dive planes, rear carbon-fiber aerodynamic discs, magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats and a lighter damper system. These are Ford’s explanations of its own car, not findings from an independent comparison.
Corvette ZR1X
Chevrolet describes the Nürburgring ZR1X as an electrified, all-wheel-drive car with a 1,250-horsepower twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 and a front-axle electric motor. Its listed configuration also includes carbon-fiber wheels, Michelin Cup 2R summer-only tires and carbon-ceramic brakes. Chevrolet says the U.S. production-spec Corvettes used safety equipment recommended by the track: a roll hoop, full-containment race seat, fire extinguisher and six-point harness.

How Nürburgring record laps are measured—and why category matters
The Nürburgring describes the Nordschleife record lap as a full 20.832-kilometer course, driven with a flying start and a predefined start/finish timing line. Its published process says official record attempts use calibrated timing, are supervised by a notary and have vehicle standard condition documented by a neutral testing organization. The circuit also distinguishes the scrutiny applied to series-production cars from that for racing cars, special vehicles, prototypes and concept cars; the latter are not required to meet the series-production-state scrutiny.
The circuit says official record drives have been confirmed and listed since 2019. Chevrolet likewise says the track has officially recorded, confirmed and published lap times since then, with automakers providing video evidence. Chevrolet gives a category explanation for its Corvette attempts: the ZR1 and ZR1X were not sold in Europe, while the Z06 was a North American variant, so the laps were classified Prototype/Pre-Production. Ford identifies the GTD Competition as a Pre-Production / Prototype Class entry.

Those labels are important context, not a reason to erase the times. They tell readers what kind of entries the manufacturers reported and help avoid confusing a prototype/pre-production result with an ordinary production-class benchmark.

On the reported Nordschleife times, the GTD Competition was faster than the ZR1X by 8.440 seconds. The result does not establish that the Ford would be quicker in every setting, or that the two cars were tested under equivalent conditions. The available manufacturer accounts provide lap times, drivers and selected configuration details, but no independent test comparing both cars on the same day under matched conditions.

Ford quotes CEO Jim Farley describing the GTD as a bridge between GT3 race cars and street-legal supercars, while Ford Racing director Mark Rushbrook said, “You don’t run a 6:40 at the Nürburgring on hardware alone.” Chevrolet quotes GM president Mark Reuss saying, “No auto manufacturer has done a Nürburgring lap attempt like this before.” These are each company’s statements, not independent assessments of the other car.
