MRAM and ReRAM have credible automotive opportunities, but the evidence is specific to particular embedded-memory processes and products—not blanket approval of either technology for cars. TSMC reports automotive qualification and production for its 22 nm and 16 nm embedded MRAM, and automotive qualification for its second-generation 22 nm embedded ReRAM. Everspin identifies automotive uses for specific MRAM devices. None of those statements proves that every chip built on a process is qualified, or that automakers have adopted it at scale.
What “automotive grade” means for memory
AEC-Q100 is a qualification reference for packaged integrated circuits, not a certification bestowed on an entire memory technology. Renesas describes it as “a failure mechanism based stress test qualification for packaged integrated circuits” and says qualified products are designated in their datasheets; it also cautions that not all products are intended for automotive use. See Renesas’s AEC-Q100 explanation.

That distinction matters for embedded memory. A foundry’s qualification statement applies to the specified process and does not automatically qualify every customer-designed chip made with it. A system designer still needs to confirm the specific device’s datasheet, operating conditions, safety documentation, availability, and lifecycle terms.
What the published process status supports
TSMC’s eNVM technology page distinguishes qualification, production, and development status by node and generation. Those categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Technology | Node or generation | Reported status |
|---|---|---|
| eMRAM | 22 nm | AEC-Q100 automotive-qualified and in production, according to TSMC. |
| eMRAM | 16 nm | AEC-Q100 automotive-qualified and in production, according to TSMC. |
| eMRAM | 12 nm | Automotive-grade development is underway, according to TSMC. |
| eRRAM | 22 nm, second generation | Automotive-qualified, according to TSMC. |
| eRRAM | N12e, third generation | Commercial volume production, according to TSMC; the page does not identify this status as automotive qualification. |
| eRRAM | 6 nm | Development is underway, according to TSMC. |
These are foundry-reported process statuses, not independent evaluations or proof of customer adoption. The production statement for 22 nm and 16 nm eMRAM does not mean every implementation is automotive-qualified. Likewise, TSMC’s commercial-volume-production statement for N12e eRRAM should not be read as an automotive qualification claim. Check TSMC’s current technology information for the precise process statements.
Where MRAM could fit in a vehicle
Everspin lists a range of potential automotive uses for MRAM: electronic control unit data, advanced transmission control, real-time sensor-data recording, parameter storage, in-car logging, multimedia, over-the-air updates, and powertrain modules. These are supplier-described applications, not evidence of named automaker design wins or independent deployment at scale.
These examples point to roles where a designer may value nonvolatile storage: data or parameters that should remain available after power loss, for example. The relevant question is not whether “MRAM” in general suits a car, but whether a specific device meets the electrical, environmental, capacity, interface, safety, and lifecycle needs of the intended control unit.

Everspin’s automotive page identifies the MR2A08A as a 4 Mb MRAM with an 8-bit parallel interface and AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification. The same page describes operation from -40°C to 125°C and says an AEC-Q100 Grade 1 MRAM retains data for 20 years over that temperature range. These are vendor statements; confirm the limits, retention conditions, qualification status, and interface details in the current datasheet for the exact part before using them in a design. - The TPS54335A is a synchronous converter with an input voltage range of 4.5V to 28V. The devices integrate a low-side switching field effect transistor (FET), eliminating the need for an external diode, thereby reducing component count.
- Applications: Can be used in digital television (DTV), set-top boxes (STB, digital video disc (DVD)/Blu-ray players), LCD monitors, customer premise equipment (CPE) (cable modems, WiFi routers), digital light processing (DLP) projectors, smart meters, battery chargers. Industrial and automotive audio power supplies.
- Voltage - Input (Min) 4.5V. Voltage-Input (Max) 28V. Voltage-Output (Min/Fixed) 0.8V. Voltage-Output (Max) 24V. Current-Output 3A.
- Frequency - Switching 50kHz~1.5MHz.
- Operating Temperature -40¡ãC~150¡ãC (TJ).
The stated temperature range and retention figure should not be generalized to other MRAM products. Nor do they establish that the MR2A08A is appropriate for a particular vehicle application without reviewing its full specifications and system requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this comparison does—and does not—show
The available statements support a narrow comparison of published qualification and maturity claims. They do not establish which technology is faster, cheaper, more reliable, or better for a particular automotive workload. The source material also does not provide a market-size estimate, independent reliability comparison, or named customer adoption data for automotive MRAM or ReRAM.
- MRAM: TSMC reports qualified, in-production eMRAM at 22 nm and 16 nm, with 12 nm automotive-grade development underway. Everspin names concrete use cases and identifies one Grade 1-qualified product.
- ReRAM: TSMC reports automotive qualification for its second-generation 22 nm eRRAM. Its separate N12e volume-production statement and 6 nm development status describe different milestones, not proof of automotive qualification at those nodes.
For a design decision, compare the exact device or process documentation: qualification scope, operating conditions, intended memory role, functional-safety evidence where relevant, commercial access, and long-term supply commitments. A technology-level headline cannot answer those product-level questions.
