The clearest production example is the BMW C1, a two-wheeler sold from 2000 to 2003 with an overhead structure, windshield and safety-cell features. Yamaha’s 05GEN is a roofed mobility concept, not a production motorcycle. This guide separates what was built and sold from what remained a design study.
How many roofed motorcycles can be documented?
On the evidence available here, one production motorcycle qualifies: the BMW C1. Yamaha’s 05GEN can be included only if the scope expands to concepts and motorcycle-adjacent personal mobility. That is not enough to make a factual “top 10” ranking. Filling ten slots with unrelated three-wheelers, aftermarket canopies or concepts without documented roofs would make the list misleading.
“Roof” also needs a clear definition. The C1 had a fixed overhead structure and windshield around a two-wheeled motor vehicle. A light canopy on a mobility concept is a different design, and a four-wheeled leaning motorcycle concept is not automatically a roofed vehicle. The entries below are therefore examples, not a ranked top 10.
Documented examples
1. BMW C1 — production two-wheeler
BMW introduced the C1 in Europe in April 2000. Its defining feature was a roof and windshield integrated with a safety cell, alongside seat belts and a head restraint. BMW described the system as intended to provide protection while riding without a conventional helmet; that was a period manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of car-like crash protection or current legal permission to ride without a helmet. BMW’s 2000 launch materials described a water-cooled, four-stroke 125 cc engine producing 11 kW (15 PS) at 9,250 rpm and 12 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The materials listed a maximum speed of 103 km/h and consumption of 2.9 L/100 km; these are historical manufacturer figures for the described configuration, not current independent test results. It also listed a passenger seat, variable luggage system, audio system and heating package as accessories. The same materials gave a length of 2.08 m, width of 1.03 m, weight of 185 kg, and 0–50 km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds. BMW Group Classic says nearly 34,000 buyers chose the C1 between 2000 and 2003, and that it had no follow-up model. The source does not establish present-day new availability; a buyer looking for one should treat it as a used or restoration vehicle and check condition, parts fitment and local registration requirements. 2. Yamaha 05GEN — roofed mobility concept
Yamaha’s 05GEN is a design concept whose sweeping roof was intended to shelter its user from light rain and sun. Yamaha’s concept archive presents it as a mobility concept; it does not establish a production motorcycle or a vehicle offered for sale. It belongs in a broader discussion of roofed personal mobility, not alongside the C1 as a second production bike. Why the Yamaha Tesseract does not count as a roofed motorcycle
The Tesseract is relevant as a motorcycle-like concept, but not as a roofed example: Yamaha’s history identifies it as a four-wheeled hybrid motorcycle concept unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, and the cited account does not document a roof. Its leaning suspension and hybrid engine/electric-motor drivetrain make it an interesting comparison, but those details do not satisfy the roof requirement. Yamaha says production-directed research into its leaning multi-wheel technology stopped after the 2008 global financial crisis. Yamaha’s LMW history covers the Tesseract and subsequent research.

What to check before buying a roofed motorcycle
The C1 is a historical production model, so purchasing one is a used-vehicle decision rather than a new-bike comparison. Before committing, verify the exact vehicle’s identity, condition and local registration status. For replacement parts or accessories, confirm compatibility with the specific model and year; period accessory lists do not prove that an item is currently stocked or that a modern listing will fit.
- Roof and windshield condition: Inspect the overhead structure, windshield and their mounting points for damage, repairs or deterioration.
- Restraint and safety components: Check belts, buckles, head restraint and associated hardware. Their presence does not establish that the vehicle meets current rules or offers car-equivalent protection.
- Mechanical condition: Have the engine, brakes, tires and other age-sensitive components assessed by someone familiar with the model.
- Legal status: Confirm registration, licensing and helmet requirements with the relevant authority for your location. BMW’s original helmet-related claim is not current legal advice.
Why a ten-bike ranking would be misleading
A defensible list needs each candidate’s maker and model, wheel count, production status, roof design and market history established. Here, only the C1 is documented as a production roofed two-wheeler; the 05GEN is a roofed mobility concept, while the Tesseract lacks documented roof coverage. Calling these three “motorcycles with roofs,” let alone using them to imply ten comparable purchasable models, would blur important differences between a production vehicle, a concept and an unroofed design study.
