In the 2026 MotoGP format, there is no separate Sprint qualifying session: Friday’s Q1 and Q2 determine the starting grid for both Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. MotoGP has announced a different system for 2027, with separate qualifying sessions—and separate grids—for the two races.
How does MotoGP Sprint qualifying work in 2026?
For the 2026 season, “Sprint qualifying” is shorthand for the ordinary MotoGP qualifying sequence, not the name of an additional session. Friday Practice determines which riders earn a direct place in Q2. Q1 then gives two more riders a route into Q2. The combined Q1 and Q2 results set one grid that is used for both races.

The process has three stages:
- Friday Practice sorts the first ten. The ten fastest riders in Practice advance directly to Q2.
- Q1 offers two more places. Riders who did not finish in the top ten in Practice contest Q1. Its two fastest riders advance to Q2; the others are placed from 13th onward according to their Q1 performance.
- Q2 decides the front 12. The ten riders who advanced directly from Practice join the two Q1 qualifiers. Their Q2 results determine positions one through 12, including pole position.
In practical terms, a rider outside the top ten in Friday Practice is not automatically out of contention for pole. That rider must first finish among the top two in Q1 to reach Q2. A rider who does not make that cut cannot qualify for one of the top 12 grid positions under this format.
MotoGP’s official explainer, How Does MotoGP Qualifying Affect the Race? (7 May 2025), describes this progression and confirms that the resulting grid serves both races. The format is about how riders earn their starting positions; it does not create a second, Sprint-only qualifying result.

What is the 2026 weekend schedule?
MotoGP’s published standard schedule places Practice and qualifying across Friday and Saturday, followed by the Sprint and Grand Prix. Session timing can vary with the event schedule, so a round’s published timetable is the authority for its start times.
| Day | Session | Published standard duration | Role in the current format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday | FP1 | 45 minutes | Practice session; Friday Practice later determines the ten direct Q2 places. |
| Friday | Practice | 60 minutes | The ten fastest riders advance directly to Q2; the rest must contest Q1. |
| Saturday | FP2 | 30 minutes | Practice session in the published schedule. |
| Saturday | Q1 | 15 minutes | The two fastest riders advance to Q2; the rest are allocated grid positions from 13th onward. |
| Saturday | Q2 | 15 minutes | Determines positions one through 12. |
| Saturday | Sprint | Not stated in the cited standard schedule | A points-paying race using the grid set by Q1 and Q2. |
| Sunday | Warm-up | 10 minutes | Warm-up session before the Grand Prix. |
| Sunday | Grand Prix | Not stated in the cited standard schedule | The full Sunday race, starting from the same qualifying grid as the Sprint. |
The durations above are those in MotoGP’s published standard schedule, not a guarantee that every event will run at identical local times. In particular, qualifying is a Saturday session in that schedule, while the Practice result that determines direct Q2 entry comes from Friday.
Does the Sprint decide the Sunday Grand Prix grid?
No. Under the 2026 format, the Sprint’s finishing order does not reset, improve or otherwise determine the Sunday starting order. Both races use the positions established by the same Q1/Q2 qualifying sequence. A rider can therefore finish the Sprint in a different order from the position in which that rider starts the Grand Prix.

That distinction separates a race result from a grid-setting result. The Sprint awards championship points, but it is not a qualifying session and its finish is not a second route to Sunday’s grid. Any event-specific changes arising from official classifications, penalties or later bulletins are separate from this general format; the event’s official information should be checked for those cases.
How is Grand Prix qualifying different from Sprint qualifying?
For 2026, the answer is that they are not separate competitions: MotoGP has one Q1/Q2 qualifying sequence for both races. The phrase “Grand Prix qualifying” refers to the same sequence sometimes informally called Sprint qualifying because it also sets the Sprint grid.
| Question | 2026 format | Announced 2027 format |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a dedicated Sprint qualifying session? | No. Q1 and Q2 set both grids. | Yes. A separate Friday Sprint qualifying session is scheduled. |
| What sets the Sprint grid? | The shared Q1/Q2 result. | Friday’s Sprint qualifying. |
| What sets the Grand Prix grid? | The same Q1/Q2 result as the Sprint. | Saturday’s Grand Prix Q1 and Q2. |
| How does a rider reach Q2? | The ten fastest in Friday Practice advance directly; the top two in Q1 fill the other places. | For Grand Prix qualifying, all riders start in GP Q1 and its top 12 advance to GP Q2. Sprint qualifying is a separate 15-minute session open to all riders. |
| Does the Sprint finish set the Sunday grid? | No; qualifying sets both grids. | No; the announced Grand Prix grid is set by its separate Saturday qualifying session. |
What changes in MotoGP qualifying in 2027?
MotoGP announced the new weekend format on 7 October 2026. From 2027, the Sprint and Grand Prix will have separate qualifying sessions, so the two races will start from separate grids. This is a substantive change from the shared-grid system used in 2026, not simply a change in the name of a session.

Friday: Sprint qualifying
The announced Friday schedule consists of FP1 for 45 minutes, FP2 for 30 minutes, and then a 15-minute Sprint qualifying session open to all riders. That Friday qualifying session sets the Sprint grid. The announcement describes it as a separate contest rather than a continuation of Saturday’s Grand Prix qualifying.

Saturday is scheduled to include FP3 for 20 minutes, followed by Grand Prix Q1 and Grand Prix Q2, each lasting 15 minutes. All riders begin in GP Q1, and its top 12 progress to GP Q2. Q2 then determines the leading 12 positions on the Grand Prix grid. This differs from the 2026 route to Q2, where ten riders qualify directly from Friday Practice and only the remaining riders contest Q1 for two additional Q2 places.
Two sessions mean two grids
The cleanest way to understand the change is to ask which session determines which race’s start. In 2026, there is one answer: shared Q1/Q2 qualifying sets both grids. In the announced 2027 arrangement, Friday Sprint qualifying sets the Sprint grid and Saturday Grand Prix qualifying sets the Grand Prix grid. A rider’s qualifying result for one race will no longer, by itself, establish the starting position for the other.

MotoGP introduced the Sprint in 2023. The official explainer describes it as approximately half the distance of the full Grand Prix. It is an additional points-paying race, not a replacement for the Sunday Grand Prix.
The Sprint awards points to its top nine finishers, on this scale:

A full Sunday Grand Prix awards points through 15th place. The Sprint therefore adds a shorter second opportunity to score, while the Grand Prix remains a separate race with its own full-distance points scale.
How much does qualifying position matter?
Qualifying determines where a rider begins, but a grid statistic should not be mistaken for proof that starting position guarantees a result. MotoGP’s 2025 qualifying guide reported that there were two race wins in 2023 by riders who started outside the top ten, one such win in 2022, and that one had to go back to 2016 to find the previous occurrence. This is a historical statistic as presented by MotoGP, not an independent study or a rule that predicts what will happen at any particular event.
For a fan following a weekend, the practical use of qualifying is more limited and more precise: it explains the starting order, who made Q2, and which riders must start outside the top 12 under the current format. It does not establish the eventual finishing order. Practice rankings likewise have a defined role—they determine direct Q2 entry—but do not themselves decide pole or the final top-12 grid places.

- Look at Friday Practice first. The top ten go directly to Q2 in the 2026 format. A rider outside that group still has a chance to reach Q2 through Q1.
- Check Q1 for the two advancing riders. Those two join the direct qualifiers in Q2. Other Q1 riders receive the grid positions beyond the top 12.
- Use Q2 for the front 12. Q2 sets those positions, including pole.
- Apply the same grid to both 2026 races. Do not treat the Sprint result as the Sunday starting order.
- For 2027, identify which qualifying session you are watching. The Friday session is for the Sprint grid; Saturday’s GP Q1/Q2 is for the Grand Prix grid.
