Yes—Jayden “Jayo” Archer died at age 27 on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, during a training accident in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The Australian freestyle motocross rider was practicing the triple backflip, according to ESPN. Nitro Circus confirmed his death.
Archer became internationally known as the first rider to land a triple backflip in freestyle motocross competition. He also won bronze in Moto X Best Trick at X Games California 2023. The exact mechanics of the fatal accident were not publicly established in the strongest contemporaneous reports.
What happened to Jayo Archer?
Archer died during a training session in Melbourne on February 21, 2024. Reports identify the incident as a training accident and say he was practicing the triple backflip—the demanding trick that had made him one of freestyle motocross’s most recognizable riders.
CBS News, citing the Associated Press, reported that Victoria Police would not release further incident details because of privacy concerns. Nitro Circus publicly confirmed Archer’s death, and ESPN reported comments from X Games and Nitro Circus representatives.

That means the following details should not be treated as confirmed: whether Archer missed an airbag, whether a foot peg or another motorcycle component failed, the precise way he crashed, or whether he died immediately at the scene. Those claims circulated in online discussions and some secondary coverage, but they were not established by the principal police, AP or ESPN reports available at the time.
Triple or quadruple backflip?
The most accurate answer is that Archer was reported to be practicing the triple backflip. He had also been working toward the much more difficult goal of becoming the first rider to land a quadruple backflip, according to ESPN and AP-linked coverage.
Those facts are related but not interchangeable. A future ambition to land a quad does not establish that the fatal training run was a quadruple backflip attempt. The safest description is that Archer died while practicing the triple, while pursuing further progression in the sport.
A backflip requires the rider and motorcycle to rotate backward in the air. A triple backflip involves three complete backward rotations before landing. In freestyle motocross, where riders launch full-size motorcycles from ramps and are judged on tricks, adding another rotation dramatically reduces the time available to regain control and prepare for landing.

Archer’s defining achievement came at the Nitro World Games in Brisbane, Australia, in October 2022. He became the first rider to land a triple backflip in freestyle motocross competition, a milestone documented in a Nitro Circus video and reported by K-Tech Australia.

The wording “in competition” matters. Archer should not be described as the first person ever to land a triple backflip, because triple backflips had reportedly been landed outside formal competition before his historic performance. His distinction was bringing the trick into a judged contest.
Archer had reportedly spent about three years pursuing the maneuver and suffered injuries during the process. His success represented a major step in FMX trick progression: he did not merely perform a spectacular demonstration, but landed the triple in a competitive setting.
There is some inconsistent reporting about the result of the 2022 Nitro World Games FMX Best Trick event. Archer unquestionably made history with the triple, but the contemporaneous K-Tech account says Harry Bink won the event. For that reason, the reliable claim is that Archer landed the first competition triple backflip—not that he necessarily won the competition’s gold medal.

Archer was an X Games medalist. The accessible event results clearly verify the following:

|---|---|---|
| X Games 2021 Moto X Best Trick | Sixth place | Best Trick final |
| X Games California 2023 Moto X Best Trick | Bronze, third place | No-handed double backflip |
ESPN, CBS and several other reports referred to Archer as a “two-time X Games medalist.” However, the results reviewed for this account clearly document his 2023 bronze and list him sixth in the 2021 Best Trick final; they do not independently establish a second X Games medal. It is therefore more precise to call him an X Games medalist, or to attribute the “two-time” description directly to ESPN rather than present it as an uncontested statistic.

His career with Nitro Circus
Archer’s rise was closely connected to Nitro Circus. He first performed in a Nitro Circus show in 2012 and remained part of the organization for more than a decade. Before becoming one of its featured riders, he worked as an assistant mechanic.
That background distinguished Archer from a performer who only appeared for the stunt itself. ESPN reported that he also worked as a suspension technician and mechanic for Raceline Performance and Factory Husqvarna Racing in Australia. His technical knowledge of motorcycle setup, suspension and preparation was part of his professional identity.

Beth King and the proposal after his historic trick
Archer proposed to his fiancée, Beth King, immediately after landing the triple backflip at the 2022 Nitro World Games in Brisbane. The proposal took place in front of the crowd, turning an already historic performance into one of the defining personal moments of his career.
Reports said Archer and King planned to marry in 2024. King later shared a public tribute after Archer’s death. She was his fiancée, not his wife; they had not married before his death.

A note about Archer’s age
Contemporaneous reports consistently described Archer as 27 when he died. Some public obituary pages contain conflicting birth-year and age information, including an erroneous age entry and later references to 28. Because those records do not agree, an exact birth date should not be published without an independently verified primary record.
The defensible wording is simple: Jayden “Jayo” Archer was 27 when he died.
Freestyle motocross versus conventional motocross
Although mainstream headlines often call Archer a motocross star, his specialty was freestyle motocross, or FMX. Conventional motocross primarily involves racing multiple riders around a dirt circuit. FMX focuses on aerial tricks performed from ramps, with competitors judged on elements such as difficulty, execution and style.
