There is an important date qualification, however. The latest Consumer Reports reliability report identified in this research, dated December 4, 2025, ranked Toyota first, Subaru second, and Lexus third. So the accurate answer depends on which report you mean: Subaru won the 2025 ranking, while Toyota reclaimed the top spot in the later report covering 2026.
Currentness check: Subaru was Consumer Reports’ most reliable brand in the 2025 ranking. The later 2026 report listed Toyota first, Subaru second, and Lexus third. Consumer Reports rankings change as new owner-survey data and model-year information are added.

How Subaru reached No. 1 in Consumer Reports’ 2025 ranking
Consumer Reports does not choose the most reliable brand by looking at one standout vehicle. Its brand ranking is based on the average predicted-reliability scores of qualifying models in each manufacturer’s lineup.
Subaru benefited from a generally strong group of seven surveyed models. The Forester and Impreza were rated well above average for reliability. The Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback, and Ascent were reported as above average or average. The Solterra was the notable below-average exception.
That mix helped Subaru’s overall brand average, but it also illustrates why “Subaru is the most reliable brand” is too broad a buying conclusion. A buyer considering a Forester is not evaluating exactly the same reliability outlook as someone considering a Solterra, and a model’s rating can change with a redesign, powertrain change, or new model year.

Consumer Reports also offered a possible explanation for Subaru’s strong showing: many Subaru models share components and systems. Carrying over systems that have already proved dependable may reduce the risk of introducing new problems during a redesign. That is Consumer Reports’ explanation of the result, not proof that component sharing alone caused Subaru to win.
What happened to Toyota and Lexus?
Lexus and Toyota had traded the top two positions for years, which made Subaru’s 2025 victory notable. Lexus finished second and Toyota third in that report.
Toyota’s 2025 result was pulled down by below-average reliability predictions for several models, including the Tacoma, Tundra, and bZ4X. This does not mean those models are guaranteed to be unreliable, nor does it erase Toyota’s historically strong performance across many vehicles. It demonstrates a more general point: a brand average can be affected by a few weaker or newer models.

The later report’s return of Toyota to first place reinforces the same lesson. Reliability rankings are snapshots of available evidence, not permanent league tables. A brand can move when Consumer Reports adds information about newer model years, updated designs, and owner-reported problems.

Consumer Reports builds predicted reliability from its Annual Auto Surveys. Vehicle owners report problems their cars experienced during the preceding 12 months. The survey covers a broad range of trouble areas, including relatively minor defects such as broken trim and infotainment issues as well as major problems involving:
- Engines
- Transmissions
- Electric motors
- EV batteries
- Electrical and climate-control systems
- Suspension and steering components
- In-car electronics and infotainment
Consumer Reports weights problem categories according to their severity and effect on owners. A failed engine or battery therefore matters more to the predicted-reliability score than an irritating but inexpensive trim defect.
The brand ranking is an average of the predicted-reliability scores for qualifying models. Consumer Reports requires enough data for at least two models before it ranks a brand. The 2025 survey included about 380,000 vehicles from the 2000 through 2025 model years, along with a small number of early 2026 models.
That large sample provides useful statistical depth, but it also means the ranking has a time lag. The survey describes problems owners experienced in the prior year, and the result combines vehicles from multiple model years. It is best understood as a forecast based on reported owner problems and recent model history—not a promise that a newly purchased car will be trouble-free.
Reliability is not the same as overall quality
Consumer Reports’ reliability ranking should not be confused with its broader brand or vehicle report card. Reliability measures the likelihood and severity of reported problems. An overall score can also consider factors such as road-test performance, owner satisfaction, and safety-related criteria.

A car can be enjoyable to drive, safe, comfortable, and well equipped while still having a weaker predicted-reliability score. Conversely, a dependable car may not be the best choice for every buyer’s priorities. Use reliability as one filter, then compare the vehicle’s safety, fuel economy, price, cargo space, performance, comfort, and ownership costs.
Why the brand winner should not determine your purchase
Consumer Reports cautions shoppers to investigate individual models even when a brand ranks highly. There are four reasons that advice matters:
1. Brand averages hide model differences
Subaru’s 2025 result included strong performers such as the Forester and Impreza but also a below-average Solterra. Toyota’s third-place result included many competitive vehicles but was hurt by weaker predictions for models such as the Tacoma, Tundra, and bZ4X.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The relevant question is not simply “Which brand won?” It is “How has the exact model and model year I want performed?”
2. New technology creates uncertainty
Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles can introduce different components and software from their gasoline counterparts. That does not make them inherently unreliable, but it can make early reliability predictions less certain when there is limited owner history.
Research the exact powertrain rather than assuming that a gasoline model’s record applies to its hybrid or electric sibling. The same caution applies to a vehicle that has just received a new battery system, transmission, engine, or major software architecture.

3. Redesigns can change the risk profile
An established model with several years of broadly unchanged components usually has more evidence behind it than an all-new or heavily redesigned vehicle. A redesign may solve old problems, but it can also introduce new ones that are not visible until many owners accumulate miles.
When comparing model years, look for a clear reason to prefer the newest version. If the newest model is all-new, compare its limited reliability evidence with the more established version rather than automatically assuming that newer means better.
4. A used car is not the same product as a new-car ranking
A strong current brand ranking does not establish that every older used vehicle from that manufacturer is a good purchase. Used-car reliability depends on the exact generation, mileage, maintenance, accident history, previous use, and condition of the individual vehicle.
A practical way to use the Consumer Reports ranking
- Use the brand ranking as a shortlist signal. Subaru’s first-place 2025 result is a reason to investigate its models, not a reason to buy any Subaru without comparison.
- Choose the vehicle category first. Decide whether you need a compact car, family SUV, pickup, luxury vehicle, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or EV. A reliable vehicle that cannot meet your needs is still the wrong purchase.
- Compare the exact model and model year. Check the model-level predicted-reliability rating, problem areas, owner satisfaction, safety information, and road-test results where available.
- Identify redesign and powertrain changes. Treat all-new vehicles and recently revised hybrids or EVs as having less proven history than established versions.
- Estimate ownership costs. Include scheduled maintenance, tires, insurance, fuel or charging, repairs outside warranty, and the cost of specialized parts or service.
- For a used vehicle, inspect the specific car. Review maintenance records, title and accident history, mileage, service intervals, signs of neglect, and the vehicle’s recall status.
- Check the VIN for unrepaired safety recalls. Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s official recall lookup at NHTSA.gov/recalls. The tool accepts a license plate number or a 17-character vehicle identification number and identifies unrepaired safety recalls associated with that vehicle.
New, certified used, or used: apply different standards
For a new vehicle, predicted reliability and redesign history are especially useful because there may be little owner experience with the exact current model. Warranty coverage can reduce the financial risk of some defects, but it does not eliminate inconvenience, downtime, or problems that are not covered.
A certified pre-owned vehicle may include additional inspection requirements and warranty coverage, depending on the manufacturer’s program and the vehicle’s location. Read the actual program terms rather than assuming every certified vehicle has identical protection.

With an ordinary used vehicle, condition and records deserve at least as much attention as the brand ranking. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection when practical, and obtain a vehicle history report from a reputable provider before committing to the purchase. These steps cannot predict every future failure, but they can reveal accident damage, inconsistent mileage, neglected maintenance, or other reasons to walk away.

What to read before buying
If you want to go beyond a single brand ranking, the Consumer Reports New Car Buying Guide is a relevant companion for comparing current models, reliability information, and other buying factors. Check the edition and availability at the time you buy, since published guides and retailer listings can change.
So, which brand is most reliable?
For Consumer Reports’ 2025 Annual Auto Reliability Survey, the answer is Subaru. It ranked ahead of Lexus and Toyota, helped by strong predicted-reliability results for models including the Forester and Impreza.
For the later 2026 report identified in this research, Toyota was first, Subaru second, and Lexus third. That date distinction is essential. Neither result means every vehicle from the winning brand will outperform every vehicle from the others, and neither guarantees a trouble-free ownership experience.
The best buying decision comes from combining the ranking with model-level evidence, exact model-year research, redesign and powertrain caution, ownership-cost estimates, a used-car inspection when appropriate, and a VIN recall check.
