The Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling SUV in the United States in full-year 2024, with 475,193 sales reported by Toyota. The Honda CR-V followed with 402,791. This is a historical U.S. calendar-year ranking—not a measure of current popularity—and the Tesla Model Y’s position is uncertain because published estimates differ.
Best-selling SUV models in the U.S. in 2024
The figures below combine automaker-reported totals with a published cross-brand ranking. Toyota, Honda and Ford reported their own model totals; the other non-Tesla figures come from the compiled AS USA ranking. AS USA says its roundup combines official reports and estimates, so not every figure is a manufacturer-reported number.

The Tesla entry is not a directly comparable confirmed total. MotorTrend, citing JATO Dynamics, reports an estimate of 372,613, while AS USA gives 416,000. Treat the number and exact placement as source-dependent rather than as a settled rank.
What the automakers reported
Toyota RAV4
Toyota Motor North America reported 475,193 U.S. RAV4 sales for calendar year 2024, a 9.3% increase. It said the RAV4 was the country’s best-selling SUV for the eighth year in a row. Toyota’s 2024 U.S. sales release was published in 2025.

Honda CR-V
American Honda reported 402,791 CR-V sales in 2024, up 11% and a record for the model. Its release also notes that a limited number of CR-V e:FCEV sales are included. American Honda’s release reported more than 760,000 Honda SUV sales across its lineup; that broader total is not a model ranking.
Ford Explorer
Ford reported 194,094 Explorer sales in 2024 and identified it as America’s best-selling three-row SUV. Ford’s release also reported 771,042 total Ford SUV sales, a brand-wide figure rather than an Explorer total. Ford’s 2024 U.S. sales release was published in 2025.

How to interpret this ranking
- It covers U.S. calendar-year sales. The totals are for January through December 2024, not global sales or sales “so far” in the current year.
- It mixes evidence types. Automaker releases are the stronger source for each company’s own model total; the cross-brand list is useful for ordering but includes compiled figures and estimates.
- Sales rank is not a vehicle recommendation. Unit volume does not establish reliability, safety, value, owner satisfaction or whether a model suits a particular household.
- Production is a different measure. The EPA’s Automotive Trends dataset uses model-year production delivered for sale in the United States, which may differ from calendar-year sales. EPA’s methodology explains that distinction.
