Available U.S. manufacturer and safety records document several issues affecting certain 2023 Ford Rangers, but they do not establish which complaints are most frequent across the model year. The documented concerns include a 2.3L engine-block crack and coolant-leak program, a wheel-lug-nut recall, and a load-capacity label recall. Whether any applies to a particular truck depends on its VIN and repair history.
What the records establish—and what they do not
Ford customer service programs and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalls identify specific conditions, eligible vehicles, and remedies. They are not a frequency ranking of owner complaints. An action covering a subset of trucks does not mean every 2023 Ranger has the problem, or that it is among the most common problems across the model year.
NHTSA says it considers complaints alongside other information when evaluating whether a potential safety-defect trend exists; complaint totals alone do not confirm a defect. The records described here do not establish transmission, electrical, or infotainment problems as leading issues for the 2023 Ranger. NHTSA explains recall searches and investigations.

2.3L engine-block crack and coolant leak
Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 23B42, dated October 26, 2023, covers certain 2023 Rangers equipped with the 2.3L gas engine. Ford says a damaged tool used during engine-block casting may cause a crack on the right side of the block. The described symptom progression can include low coolant pressure, a visible coolant leak beneath the vehicle, and a Service Engine Soon indicator associated with overheating.

Ford’s document reports 131 affected vehicles across the Ranger, Bronco, and Explorer populations listed in the program. That is a program population count, not a count of Ranger complaints or a failure rate. Ford instructed dealers to replace the engine long block at no charge on affected vehicles. Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 23B42.
Ford also issued an earlier, separate program, 23B05, dated February 10, 2023, concerning recommended engine replacement for certain 2023 Rangers, Broncos, and Explorers with the 2.3L gas engine. Its population and terms should not be assumed to match 23B42; eligibility is identified by VIN. Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 23B05.

Potentially loose wheel lug nuts
NHTSA recall 23V-283 concerns certain 2023 Rangers and Broncos whose driver-side wheel lug nuts may not have been properly tightened. If they loosen, a wheel could detach. The remedy is a free dealer inspection and retightening if needed. NHTSA’s acknowledgment says owners were advised not to drive affected vehicles until the remedy was completed. Check the truck’s VIN and repair status rather than assuming the recall applies to every Ranger. NHTSA recall 23V-283.
Incorrect load-capacity label
NHTSA recall 23V-379 includes certain 2019–2023 Rangers, as well as specified Broncos and 2023 Super Duty F-250 trucks. The Tire and Loading Information label may list an incorrect load-carrying capacity; relying on it could contribute to overloading and increase crash risk. The stated remedy is a corrected label at no charge. This is a labeling and compliance issue, not evidence of a suspension or chassis failure. NHTSA recall 23V-379.

How to check a specific Ranger
- Look up the 17-character VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup to check whether a particular truck has an open safety recall. A year/make/model search shows broader records; it does not prove that an individual vehicle is affected.
- Ask a Ford dealer about customer service programs. Request a VIN-based check for programs 23B42 and 23B05 and confirmation of any completed repairs. These Ford programs are distinct from NHTSA safety recalls.
- Review repair and service records. Look for engine long-block replacement, cooling-system complaints, and documentation that applicable recall remedies were completed. This is especially pertinent to a truck built during 23B42’s stated production window.
- Address an open recall through a dealer. Follow the recall instructions and arrange the prescribed remedy. For a used-truck purchase, an independent inspection can complement VIN and service-history checks.
Recall status and repair completion are vehicle-specific. NHTSA describes VIN lookup as the way to determine whether a particular vehicle needs a recall repair. NHTSA recall guidance.
