A fire in the parking lot at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, plant damaged more than 50 R1T pickups and R1S SUVs late on August 24, 2024. Rivian said the plant itself was unaffected and no one was injured. The cause was not established in the reports reviewed.
What happened at Rivian’s Normal plant?
The Normal Fire Department received a call shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, according to InsideEVs’ report. Fire crews extinguished the blaze by midnight and remained at the scene to monitor the area. The fire was in a parking lot, not inside the factory building.

Rivian’s spokesperson told InsideEVs: “We are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged a number of vehicles in a parking lot at our Normal plant late Saturday night.” The spokesperson added: “The plant itself is unaffected. There were no injuries.”
How many Rivians were damaged?
Reports described different totals and used different terms. InsideEVs reported that over 50 vehicles were damaged. An Associated Press report carried by Yahoo News said 55 vehicles were destroyed. These are outlet-attributed figures, not a single company-confirmed total; “damaged” and “destroyed” also do not describe precisely the same measure.

The affected vehicles were reported to be mostly R1T and R1S models, reportedly awaiting shipment. An aerial image circulating on social media was described as showing 57 vehicles in one section of the lot, but that image count should not be treated as a confirmed tally of vehicles damaged by the fire.
What caused the fire?
The cause was unknown in the August 2024 reports. Rivian said it was investigating, and the Associated Press report carried by Yahoo News said the fire department handed the investigation to the company. The reporting reviewed here does not establish a later final investigative finding.

There is therefore no supported basis in these reports to attribute the blaze to a battery fault, a particular vehicle, or how the vehicles were parked. The incident should not be conflated with other fires involving Rivian vehicles.

Rivian’s May 2025 R1T Emergency Response Guide describes hazards associated with high-voltage battery fires and calls for protective equipment such as a self-contained breathing apparatus, along with appropriate tools. It also directs that fire-damaged vehicles be stored away from other vehicles and buildings. Those specialized procedures are for trained responders; anyone facing an active vehicle fire should move away and contact emergency services.
