What is the Milwaukee M18 HOTSHOT?
The M18 HOTSHOT, model 3841-20, is a portable jump starter powered by Milwaukee’s M18 battery platform. Instead of keeping the jump starter itself in a permanently charged state, it uses the M18 battery to charge internal capacitors when you prepare to use it. How do you use the M18 HOTSHOT?
Milwaukee’s instructions describe this sequence:
- Press the power button.
- Press the capacitor charge button and wait for the unit to charge.
- Connect the clamps to the vehicle battery, observing the correct polarity.
- Press the jump-start button.
- Start the vehicle within 30 seconds.
Milwaukee says the unit can output power for a maximum of 30 seconds. The percentage shown on its display indicates the charge level of the internal capacitors, not the state of charge of the vehicle battery. The manufacturer says override mode is intended for situations where the vehicle-battery voltage is below 1.2 V; follow the product instructions when using it.
How much does it cost, and where can you buy it?
Milwaukee announced a $299 launch price for model 3841-20. The Home Depot U.S. product listing also showed $299 for the tool-only unit when checked. That is an observed retailer price, not a guaranteed current price; promotions, availability, sellers, and listing details can change. The Home Depot listing identifies the package as one HOTSHOT jump starter. Check the listing for current contents and terms before ordering. The cited offer is tool-only, so budget for an M18 battery if you do not already have one. Which M18 battery does it use?
Milwaukee says the HOTSHOT works with all M18 batteries and is optimized for M18 REDLITHIUM XC5.0 batteries and larger. Its claim of up to 70 jump starts on one charge is specifically tied to one M18 XC5.0 battery. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result; actual starts can vary with battery condition and charge, the vehicle, temperature, and starting conditions.

Which vehicles can it jump-start?
Milwaukee lists up to 2,000 peak amps and support for gasoline engines up to 8.1 L and diesel engines up to 3.0 L. Those published limits are not a guarantee that it will start every vehicle at or below those engine sizes. Check the vehicle’s battery and starting requirements rather than relying on peak amps or displacement alone.
Milwaukee-authored answers on the retailer listing say the HOTSHOT is for standard automotive batteries and may not be suitable for some heavy-duty diesel applications. One example given is a 6.6 L Duramax requiring 1,600 or more CCA. The cited specifications do not establish support for 6-volt batteries, so confirm compatibility with Milwaukee and the vehicle manufacturer before attempting to use it on one.
