The Mercury Cougar entered the pony-car market for the 1967 model year as a more upscale alternative built on the Ford Mustang platform. Its Mercury identity, styling and interior appointments gave it a different market position—not a basis for assuming every Cougar had the same equipment. A 1968 Cougar XR7-G preserved at The Henry Ford offers a specific example of that blend of luxury and performance.
Why Mercury created the Cougar
The Cougar was Mercury’s entry into the specialty-car market that the Mustang had helped establish. It shared the Mustang platform, but Mercury gave it its own upscale styling and interior appointments. The distinction was one of brand and positioning: the Cougar brought a more premium Mercury character to the pony-car formula.
The Henry Ford describes the Cougar as “something of a ‘poor man’s Jaguar.’” That is the museum’s characterization, not a factory slogan. The available evidence supports the upscale positioning, but does not provide a like-for-like specification comparison with the Mustang; claims that one was objectively better equipped or superior should therefore be avoided.
What made the Cougar feel more upscale?
Mercury differentiated the Cougar through its styling and interior appointments, as well as its own trim and model-year-specific configurations. Those details varied by version; a single museum car cannot stand in for every Cougar. The key point is that Mercury positioned the model above the Mustang in character, while building it on the same platform.

The 1968 XR7-G at The Henry Ford
The Henry Ford’s collection documents a 1968 Cougar XR7-G coupe. Its listed specifications describe that particular museum car—not the entire 1968 Cougar range.
| Specification | 1968 museum XR7-G |
|---|---|
| Engine | 390-cubic-inch overhead-valve V-8 |
| Carburetor | Four-barrel; the “4V” designation refers to this setup |
| Horsepower | 335 hp at 4,800 rpm |
| Transmission | Three-speed automatic |
| Wheelbase | 111 inches |
| Length | 190.5 inches |
| Width | 71 inches |
| Height | 52 inches |
| Weight | 3,134 pounds |
| Original listed price | $3,232 |
These figures come from The Henry Ford’s collection record for its XR7-G. They are useful for understanding one well-documented car, but should not be generalized to all Cougars or all XR7-Gs. Matt Anderson, transportation curator at The Henry Ford, said the Cougar in the period discussed did not offer a six-cylinder engine layout: “Unlike other pony cars, the upscale Mercury Cougar didn’t bother with 6-bangers–V-8 was the only available engine layout.”

Anderson also explained the engine notation: “The ‘V’ is for Venturi, meaning that there’s a four-barrel carburetor under that air cleaner.” In the museum car’s 390-4V description, the practical takeaway is a 390-cubic-inch V-8 with a four-barrel carburetor.
What the XR7-G name adds
The XR7-G gives the Cougar story a performance and promotion dimension. The XR7-G Registry reports that Lincoln-Mercury introduced the package during the 1968 model year and associated the “G” with Dan Gurney. The registry is the source for that account; it should not be treated as a description of every XR-7, GT, GT-E or other Cougar configuration.

How to research a Cougar by model year
For identification, maintenance or restoration, use documentation that matches the car’s model year and configuration. A 1967 Ford shop-manual preview explicitly includes Cougar service coverage, with sections spanning brakes; suspension, steering, wheels and tires; rear axle; transmissions; engine; ignition; fuel; cooling; exhaust; electrical systems; body; trim; and specifications. A preview establishes the manual’s listed contents, not that a particular edition is currently in stock.
The Cougar Club of America’s technical library is another useful starting point. It includes production information, documentation, paint chips and a 428CJ parts listing. A parts listing can help guide model-specific research, but it does not by itself establish that a part fits a particular car or that a seller has it available. Check application details and availability before ordering.
