Mercedes-Benz presented the W123 saloon on 27 January 1976, making 2026 the 50th anniversary of the model series’ debut. The W123 was more than one model: it grew into a family of saloons, coupés, estates and specialist versions, combining a safety-conscious design with the comfort and engineering approach Mercedes brought to its larger cars.

When did the Mercedes-Benz W123 come out?

Mercedes-Benz presented the W123 saloon in Bandol, southern France, on 27 January 1976. The date marks the presentation of the model series, not the start of every W123 body style’s production. Mercedes-Benz Austria’s 2026 anniversary retrospective says the first year’s production had sold out before the official market launch; that is the company’s retrospective account.

The W123 succeeded the W114/115 range. Its engineering and comfort drew on an S-Class-influenced approach, adapted for a medium-size car. The saloon arrived first; the family expanded the following year.

What body styles did the W123 come in?

Mercedes-Benz developed the W123 as a broad model family rather than a single saloon. The coupé and T-model estate joined in 1977, alongside long-wheelbase saloons and chassis intended for special bodies.

Body style What to know
Saloon The first W123 body style, presented in January 1976. Mercedes-Benz Austria reports 2,375,440 saloons produced.
Coupé The C123 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1977. Mercedes-Benz Austria reports 3,704 examples of the 280 C coupé, the least-produced type in its account.
T-model estate The S123 estate was presented at the Frankfurt IAA in September 1977. Mercedes-Benz describes it as an early lifestyle-oriented estate offering.
Long-wheelbase saloon A stretched version of the saloon; the Public Archive lists 13,700 produced.
Special-body chassis Chassis supplied for specialist bodies; the Public Archive lists 8,373.

The figures come from Mercedes-Benz Austria’s 2026 anniversary release and the company’s W123 Public Archive history. The categories listed here do not account for the entire production total: coupés, estates and other versions also contribute.

What made the W123 notable for safety?

Mercedes-Benz’s archive describes a reinforced passenger cell, strengthened roof and door pillars, and front and rear structures designed to absorb crash energy. A safety steering column connected the steering assembly and column tube with a corrugated metal section intended to buckle sideways in a collision, reducing the risk of the column intruding into the cabin. These are descriptions of design and intent, not a modern crash-test rating.

The suspension layout combined double-wishbone front suspension with a semi-trailing-arm rear axle. Safety equipment varied by year and market: ABS became available as an option in August 1980, and an airbag became available as an option in January 1982. Neither should be assumed to have been fitted to every W123.

How many W123 Mercedes were made?

Mercedes-Benz reports that almost 2.7 million W123 vehicles were produced across the series by 1986. The saloon total was 2,375,440, and the 240 D saloon was the most-produced individual type, with 448,986 examples, according to the company’s 2026 anniversary release. Its Public Archive says saloon production ended in November 1985; other body styles continued into 1986.

The series received a facelift in September 1982. The archive says power steering became standard with that update. The original engine range ran from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel rated at 55 hp to a 2.8-litre injected six-cylinder rated at 185 hp in the archive’s account. Mercedes-Benz also documents a 3.0-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel, initially for estates and later for North American export saloons and coupés. Availability and specifications differed by year and market, so those figures do not describe every W123.

Why is the W123 considered a classic?

The W123’s classic status rests on a combination of scale, range and reputation. It offered buyers several kinds of car on a shared model-series foundation, from practical saloons and estates to coupés and long-wheelbase versions. Its safety engineering and comfort-minded design helped distinguish it as an everyday car, while its production numbers made it a familiar sight across many markets.

Mercedes-Benz’s heritage page describes the W123 as especially popular with taxi drivers and says some examples in certain countries exceeded one million kilometres. Those are manufacturer-reported legacy claims, not a population-wide reliability statistic. A high-mileage anecdote or reputation cannot establish the condition of an individual car today.

What made the W123 so durable?

Durability became part of the W123’s reputation, but the strongest documented example is a competition result rather than proof about every road car. In the 1977 London–Sydney marathon rally, two Mercedes-Benz 280 E cars won the 30,000-kilometre event, which lasted six and a half weeks, according to the manufacturer’s 2026 retrospective. It identifies Andrew Cowan, Colin Malkin and Mike Broad as the winning team and says the winning car is now at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

The result illustrates the model’s endurance image in demanding conditions; it does not mean every surviving W123 is reliable or mechanically sound. Age, maintenance, corrosion, prior repairs and the specific engine and market version all matter when assessing an individual car.

Did Mercedes experiment with alternative fuels in the W123?

Mercedes-Benz says it offered a factory-built bivalent LPG-and-petrol engine in 1982 and tested hydrogen and battery-electric W123s. These details show that alternative powertrains were explored within the series, but the experiments do not make the W123 a mass-market electric vehicle.

What should you check when comparing W123s?

There is no single W123 specification that represents the whole range. When comparing cars, identify the body, model year, engine and original market first. A 1976 base diesel, a later 280 E and a turbo-diesel differ in equipment and character; the safety options and engine offerings changed over time and between export markets.

  • Confirm the body style and model designation, including whether the car is a saloon, coupé, T-model estate, long-wheelbase version or special-body chassis.
  • Check the engine and fuel type against the car’s year and market rather than assuming a specification from another W123 applies.
  • Verify safety equipment on the individual car; ABS and an airbag were options introduced at different dates, not universal fitment.
  • For replacement parts, Mercedes-Benz Classic’s parts program is documented by the manufacturer, but stock, retail channel and fitment can vary. Verify compatibility by chassis or VIN, model year, body style, engine and part number before ordering.

Mercedes-Benz Austria’s anniversary release lists examples of W123 parts, including brake calipers, a coupé windscreen, fenders and engine components. That supports the existence of a manufacturer parts program, not current availability or compatibility for a particular vehicle.
