There is no evidence here that Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or Audi is universally cheapest to own. The fairest comparison is between similar vehicles, for the same ownership period, using your local costs and the maintenance coverage that applies to the exact model and year. The brands’ maintenance programs can shape early bills, but they do not settle long-term repair risk, depreciation, fuel, insurance, or financing.
What ownership cost includes
Maintenance and repairs are only part of the bill. AAA’s 2026 framework includes depreciation, finance charges, fuel, maintenance, repairs, tires, license, registration, and taxes. AAA estimated average annual new-vehicle ownership cost at $12,863 in 2026, using seven vehicle categories and 34 top-selling models. Your result depends on the specific vehicle and how you use it: purchase price, model year, trim and powertrain, annual mileage, location, insurance profile, financing, fuel or charging, and how long you keep it. A compact sedan and a large SUV—or a standard trim and a performance model—are not a meaningful brand-level cost comparison.
It also helps to separate costs that are predictable from those that are uncertain. A scheduled service interval and the price of a confirmed maintenance plan can be checked in advance. By contrast, a repair average is a population-level reference, not a promise about whether your car will need a repair or what it will cost. Depreciation, insurance, financing, and fuel or charging are tied to the specific vehicle and buyer, so a brand-wide comparison cannot supply those numbers either.

When someone asks, “How’s it like owning these brands in terms of reliability, maintenance cost, and fuel consumption?”, the useful answer is not a simple badge ranking. Those are related but distinct questions: maintenance coverage describes scheduled work; repair estimates summarize a different set of costs; neither alone establishes reliability. Fuel use is also vehicle- and powertrain-specific. A fair comparison begins by naming the exact cars, then estimating all three over the same distance and ownership period.
What the available cost estimates say—and do not say
A 2026 Road Ethos comparison attributes average annual repair estimates to RepairPal and reports separate ten-year maintenance projections. The figures point in different directions because they measure different things; neither is a personalized ownership-cost forecast.

Those figures therefore cannot support a like-for-like ranking.
That timing point matters when comparing a new-car ownership period with a longer hold. An early period may include scheduled maintenance under a program, while later years can fall outside the program or warranty. How scheduled maintenance coverage differs
Included or prepaid maintenance can reduce or shift scheduled-service bills during a defined period. It is distinct from a warranty: coverage length, included operations, eligibility, and later repair costs are separate questions. Check the actual vehicle and contract rather than assuming a brand-wide benefit.

Mercedes-Benz service intervals

The published intervals are approximate and the precise schedule belongs to the vehicle’s service information. Ask for the scheduled work and price that apply to the exact car. Because the published information does not offer one uniform cross-model plan price, an advertised or quoted figure for one vehicle should not be treated as a brand-wide rate.
BMW scheduled maintenance
BMW USA says every new BMW begins with the stated Ultimate Care scheduled-maintenance coverage and provides information about extended coverage options. That coverage can matter to a buyer focused on the initial ownership period, but it does not establish an advantage over a longer holding period: later maintenance, repairs, and the terms of optional extensions still matter. Do not assume that an Audi Care offer for an older vehicle applies to a newer one, or that every car can use the same plan. Audi’s published description distinguishes Signature Care for eligible model year 2026-and-newer vehicles from prepaid Audi Care options for eligible 2025-and-older vehicles. Have the seller or dealer identify the applicable program, covered services, price, and intervals in writing before including it in your estimate.
Across all three brands, compare the coverage boundaries rather than just whether a program exists.
