The Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic is a show car, not a confirmed production model. Announced on October 14, 2025, it uses heritage-inspired styling and a lounge-like cabin to present the company’s thinking about future luxury, while featuring or discussing technologies at very different stages—from capabilities described for the show car to solar-body-coating and computing research.
What is the Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic?
Mercedes-Benz presented the Vision Iconic as a design and technology statement: a bridge between the marque’s history and a possible future shaped by electric mobility, automated driving and greater cabin comfort. The company has not announced a production launch date for the Vision Iconic itself, so it should not be treated as a preview of a confirmed retail vehicle or as a purchase-ready specification sheet. Mercedes-Benz’s October 14, 2025 announcement is the primary source for the concept’s stated intent and features; it is not independent validation of its technology claims.
Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s Member of the Board of Management and Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, said: “Vision Iconic embodies our vision for the future of mobility.” Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener described the show car as inspired by the automotive design of the 1930s. These are the company’s explanations of the concept, not promises about a production model.
How does its design look to the past and future?
An upright grille as the visual centre
The tall grille takes cues from the Mercedes-Benz W 108, W 111 and 600 Pullman. For the Vision Iconic, Mercedes-Benz describes a wide chrome frame, a smoked-glass lattice, contour lighting and an illuminated standing star on the bonnet. The company says this reinterpretation of its grille first appeared on the all-new electric GLC in September 2025. The concept surrounds it with a long, sculptural form, deep-black high-gloss finish, slim headlights and lighting animations. Terms such as “majestic” and “timeless” are the brand’s design language rather than measurable qualities.

A cabin mixing craft and screens
Mercedes-Benz calls the interior “hyper-analogue” and lounge-like. Its focal point is a floating glass instrument structure nicknamed the “Zeppelin,” which combines analogue and digital instruments with a pillar-to-pillar screen concept. The instrument cluster animates when a door opens, drawing on the appearance of high-end chronographs. One of four clock-like displays is shaped like the Mercedes star and is described as an AI companion.
The show car’s other details include a deep-blue velvet front bench seat, polished brass door handles, mother-of-pearl-look inlay and straw marquetry on the floor in a fan-shaped Art Deco motif. Mercedes-Benz dates straw marquetry to the 17th century and says the technique was revived in the 1920s. These are details of this concept’s presentation, not confirmed production materials or specifications.

Which technologies are features, future possibilities or research?
The distinction matters: the announcement describes some capabilities as part of the show car, others as possible future developments, and still others as research. The company’s figures and forecasts below are its own claims, not independently verified results from a production Vision Iconic.

Solar paint: an estimate, not customer range
Mercedes-Benz is researching photovoltaic modules that could form a thin coating on electric-vehicle bodywork and adapt to different substrates. The company says the researched cells have 20 percent efficiency, contain no rare earths or silicon, and can be recycled.

For the Vision Iconic announcement, Mercedes-Benz estimates that an 11-square-metre surface could provide energy equivalent to up to 12,000 kilometres of range per year under ideal conditions, based on light incidence in Stuttgart, Germany. This is a manufacturer estimate for a hypothetical surface, not observed range from a production vehicle. It should not be combined with a separate Mercedes-Benz Group estimate of over 14,000 kilometres per year, which uses ideal light incidence in Beijing, China, in its Auto Shanghai 2025 technology overview. The different figures refer to different stated locations and scenarios.
Neuromorphic computing: potential efficiency gains
Mercedes-Benz says it is working with research and industry partners on computing architectures that mimic aspects of the human brain. The company’s stated aim is to make AI calculations faster and more energy-efficient, potentially improving recognition of road users, lanes and signs in poor visibility.

Mercedes-Benz estimates that the approach could reduce energy requirements for autonomous-driving data processing by up to 90 percent compared with current systems. It also says example safety-system tasks could become ten times more efficient. These are potential research outcomes attributed to the company, not independently measured Vision Iconic performance.
Driving automation: Level 2 described, Level 4 proposed
The launch announcement describes enhanced Level 2 point-to-point urban capabilities as standard equipment in the show car. It presents Level 4 highway automation and highly automated parking as possible next steps, not as capabilities of a consumer-ready autonomous car. Its scenario of a driver relaxing or napping is hypothetical; it is not guidance for present-day drivers.

Steer-by-wire: steering requests sent electronically
In steer-by-wire, control units and actuators transmit steering requests electrically, removing the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels. Mercedes-Benz says this could reduce steering effort, make parking and manoeuvres easier, and give designers more cabin-layout flexibility, particularly alongside rear-axle steering.
Separately, Mercedes-Benz Group’s 2025 Auto Shanghai overview said the company planned to offer steer-by-wire on a production model from 2026, describing it as a first for a German manufacturer. That was a dated company plan; it does not establish that the plan has since been fulfilled or that the Vision Iconic is a production model.

Mercedes-Benz’s announcement identifies the Vision Iconic as a show car and gives no production launch date for it. Its design and technology can indicate areas of interest for the brand, but the announcement does not confirm that this car, its cabin details or its research technologies will reach customers in this form.
What else did Mercedes-Benz announce?
Alongside the concept, Mercedes-Benz announced a six-outfit capsule collection and the Mercedes-Benz ICONIC DESIGN Book, developed by the design team and described as containing interviews and imagery. The announcement does not establish current retail availability, pricing or a market-specific listing for the book. It is design context, not a technical manual for the Vision Iconic.
