Mercedes-Benz G-Class Spy Photos: What the February 18 Winter-Test Images Show

The February 18 spy photos reveal a smaller, boxy G-Class prototype and revised-looking front lights. Mercedes has confirmed family expansion and testing, but not the prototype’s final name, specifications or timing.

Photos published by The Drive on February 18, 2026 show a smaller, boxy Mercedes-Benz G-Class prototype undergoing winter testing. The images reveal its general shape, a revised front-lighting arrangement and roof-rack equipment—but they do not confirm a production design, specifications or a final name. The outlet’s 2027 model-year timing and powertrain predictions remain forecasts, not Mercedes-Benz announcements.

What the February 18 spy photos show

The Drive describes the images as the first spy photos of the smaller G-Class in winter testing. The prototypes retain the upright, squared-off proportions associated with the G-Class, but the front end appears to depart from the larger vehicle’s dual-light configuration. The report describes LED outlines that function as daytime running lights and turn signals. These are observations of camouflaged test vehicles, not confirmation of the final production lighting design. The Drive’s February 18, 2026 report

Some prototypes wear full-length roof racks; one has a ladder-style setup. Those items are visible test-vehicle equipment only. The photos do not establish that Mercedes will offer the racks or ladder on a production model, or that existing G-Class accessories will fit.

How small is the smaller G?

The images suggest a smaller vehicle than the established G-Class, and The Drive also discusses its apparent scale in relation to vehicles seen in earlier transporter photos. But the report provides no measured length, width or height. There is not enough information here to give a reliable dimension or quantify how much smaller the prototype is.

What is known about its name, timing and powertrains?

“Baby G-Class” and “smaller G” are informal labels used in coverage, not a confirmed commercial name. The Drive expects the vehicle to reach production in time for the 2027 model year and expects both fully electric and combustion versions. Those are publication forecasts; they are not confirmed specifications from Mercedes-Benz. The Drive’s report

Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. newsroom archive lists a December 2, 2025 announcement titled “The legendary G-Class family is growing: Tough testing programs begin.” That official entry confirms the broader family-expansion plan and that testing programs had begun, but it does not verify this prototype’s final name, model-year timing, powertrain lineup or production configuration. What the prototype does—and does not—tell us about G-Class capability

The current G-Class provides context, but its engineering cannot be assumed to carry over to the smaller vehicle. Mercedes-Benz describes the established model as using ladder-frame construction, three mechanical differential locks and LOW RANGE gearing. Those are details of the current G-Class, not confirmed specifications for the prototype. Mercedes-Benz’s 2024 G-Class background

The G-Class model series dates to 1979, according to Mercedes-Benz. That history explains why a smaller member of the family attracts attention, but it does not establish the new vehicle’s dimensions, off-road hardware, performance, range or price.
