A September 2023 report said production of the then-current version was expected to end in the first quarter of 2024, but the timing was a forecast tied to a model transition—not a confirmed final build date or a plan to discontinue the line.
What the early-2024 production report said
On September 19, 2023, Carscoops reported that production of the current G-Class was expected to cease in Q1 2024. The report attributed the timing to an internal Mercedes-Benz letter that had been reported by Business Insider Germany. The letter did not identify a specific final production date.
The report therefore described an expected end for the outgoing version, not an official announcement that Mercedes-Benz would stop making G-Class vehicles. The internal letter itself was not available in the reviewed sources, so the exact final build date, affected variants and market-by-market scope are not established.
Why the G-Class line continued
Mercedes-Benz had already indicated that the G-Class would move into a new phase rather than disappear. On April 20, 2023, the company marked the 500,000th G-Class and said the fully electric version was planned to join combustion models from 2024. In the same milestone release, Dr. Emmerich Schiller, then head of the Geländewagen product area and managing director of Mercedes-Benz G GmbH, said: “Mit der vollelektrischen G-Klasse, die ab 2024 parallel zu den Modellen mit Verbrennungsmotoren vom Band läuft, steigt die Geländewagen-Ikone in die Zukunft ein.”

Mercedes-Benz subsequently presented the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology in its April 24, 2024 press kit. That announcement confirmed the electric model’s arrival, while the 2023 statement had described the plan for electric and combustion versions to run alongside one another.
What later production milestones confirm
On August 5, 2025, Mercedes-Benz said the 600,000th G-Class had rolled off the production line in Graz. The milestone vehicle was a G 580 with EQ Technology. The company’s later announcement confirms that G-Class production continued after the Q1 2024 period cited in the 2023 report; it does not establish exactly when the outgoing version stopped or how many units were built after the forecast cutoff.

The milestone history also places the model’s production in context. Mercedes-Benz and Magna each reported 500,000 G-Class vehicles in April 2023, and Magna said it had built the model since 1979. The later 600,000-unit figure is Mercedes-Benz’s reported milestone, not a separate accounting of production since the reported transition.

No. The available timeline points to a transition from the then-current version, with electric and combustion G-Class models planned to coexist—not the end of the G-Class nameplate. The Q1 2024 cutoff came from contemporary secondary reporting and remained imprecise; subsequent Mercedes-Benz announcements documented the electric G 580 and continued production in Graz.
