Mercedes-Benz CLK 200’s Turbo M104 Inline-Six Is Reported at 700 HP

A W209 CLK 200 reportedly progressed from a supercharged M271 to a turbocharged 3.6-liter M104 inline-six rated at 700 hp, though reports differ on boost and torque.

A Polish enthusiast’s Mercedes-Benz CLK 200 (W209) is reported to make 700 hp with a turbocharged 3.6-liter Mercedes M104 inline-six. That figure comes from automotive coverage, not an independently verified dyno sheet, and two reports disagree on the engine’s boost and torque details. The car is a heavily evolved CLK 200—not a CLK Black Series—and its build history helps explain how it got here.

How the CLK 200’s engine changed

Mercedes-Benz Worldwide’s December 2023 account describes the project as a progression from the car’s reported original 1.8-liter supercharged M271 four-cylinder, through two different engines, to its current inline-six:

Build stage Reported configuration Reported output
Starting car 1.8-liter supercharged M271 inline-four Not stated by Mercedes-Benz Worldwide (2023)
First swap 2.3-liter turbocharged M111 inline-four 450 hp, Mercedes-Benz Worldwide (2023)
Second swap 3.2-liter boosted M104 inline-six 520 hp, Mercedes-Benz Worldwide (2023)
Current setup in the reports 3.6-liter turbocharged M104 inline-six 700 hp, with details varying by report

The chronology and intermediate outputs are figures reported by Mercedes-Benz Worldwide; they are not accompanied by a published measurement basis in the account. The sequence shows that the 700-hp claim belongs to the latest reported configuration, not to the CLK’s original four-cylinder setup.

What is reported about the 3.6-liter M104

The two accounts agree on a 3.6-liter M104 inline-six and a reported 700 hp, but their supporting specifications do not match. Engine Swap Depot’s March 2024 report gives 900 Nm of torque at 1.5 bar of boost. Mercedes-Benz Worldwide’s December 2023 story instead reports 664 lb-ft and 22 psi.

Engine Swap Depot, March 15, 2024 700 hp 900 Nm 1.5 bar Not stated in this report

These are publisher-reported specifications, not a single reconciled set of measurements. Neither account provides a dated dyno sheet establishing how the 700 hp was measured, so it should not be described as wheel horsepower. Mercedes-Benz Worldwide mentions dyno testing, but says the available video did not show the car being driven on the road.

The later M104 project is a separate engine

Engine Swap Depot’s 2024 coverage also describes Marcin beginning work on another M104, with a target of 600–800 hp. That planned engine started as a 2.8-liter unit and was reportedly enlarged to 3.35 liters with an OM648 crankshaft. The reported parts list includes forged pistons, a girdle, a ported head, aftermarket camshafts, solid lifters and a multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket.

This is a subsequent engine project, not evidence that the running 3.6-liter setup’s reported output or specification changed. The target range is a goal for the newer build, not a reported dyno result.

Other W209 M104 builds are not the same car

Two Team Lovetap examples provide context for what other M104-powered W209 CLK projects have achieved, but they are separate drift cars with different hardware. Their wheel-output figures cannot verify the Polish CLK’s reported 700 hp.

Report Reported engine and result Context
Engine Swap Depot, July 18, 2019 3.2-liter M104.992; 800 hp and 930 Nm at the wheels Separate 2003 Team Lovetap drift CLK
Engine Swap Depot, April 14, 2026 Freshly built M104; 932 hp (685 kW) and 1,054 Nm (777 lb-ft) at the wheels Later dyno result attributed to Mårten Stångberg and Team Lovetap’s W209 CLK

The 2019 report describes extensive changes to the drift car: stock pistons with forged 144 mm rods, a main girdle, custom intake and exhaust manifolds, a custom dry-sump system, a BorgWarner EFR 9180 turbocharger, Bosch 2200 cc injectors, a Nuke Performance fuel rail and an Emtron KV8 ECU. Its transmission and chassis were also built for the application: a Tex Racing T101a four-speed dogbox, Sachs Motorsports pressure plate, Tenaci Motorsport clutch discs and flywheel, custom 4-inch driveshaft, BMW E34 differential adapted to the Mercedes subframe, upgraded axles, modified knuckles and hubs, custom control arms, KW 3-way coilovers, a roll cage and racing harnesses.

The 2026 report identifies a Tex Racing T101a four-speed transmission, custom 4-inch driveshaft and BMW E34 differential on the Team Lovetap car. It reports a wheel-dyno result for that car’s later configuration; it does not establish an update to the Polish 700-hp CLK.

What the 700-hp figure does—and does not—tell you

The featured CLK’s power figure is best treated as a reported output claim. The sources do not establish whether it is measured at the engine or wheels, and they do not provide an original dyno sheet for independent review. By contrast, both Team Lovetap reports explicitly give wheel-output figures, which should remain distinct from the featured car’s unspecified 700 hp.

  • Reported hardware: the 2023 account names the turbocharger, injectors and cooling upgrades; the two sources differ on boost and torque.
  • Unestablished performance: the available accounts do not provide verified acceleration times, reliability evidence or a technical inspection.
  • Road use: the sources do not establish that the featured car is road-legal or road-ready.
