Mercedes-Benz added permanent all-wheel drive to its new Vito range in 2015, giving buyers a third drivetrain choice alongside front- and rear-wheel drive. The launch model was the Vito 119 BlueTEC 4×4, with a rear-biased torque split and electronic traction control. Its performance, fuel-economy and emissions figures below are historical manufacturer claims, not current or independently tested results.
What changed when Mercedes introduced the Vito 4×4?
Mercedes-Benz Italia announced the Vito 4×4 on 19 February 2015 as the final addition to the new Vito lineup. The Vito had launched in Europe in 2014; Daimler’s 2015 annual report says it reached North America in October 2015 as the Metris. The 4×4 was therefore a drivetrain addition to that generation, not a separate van line.
At launch, Mercedes-Benz described the Vito as the only mid-size van then offered with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and permanent all-wheel drive. That was the company’s period-specific claim, not a current ranking of the van market. Its Italian release put the point this way: “È l’unico mid-size van disponibile con trazione anteriore, posteriore ed ora anche integrale permanente.”
How does the Vito 4×4 system work?
The 4×4 was based on the rear-wheel-drive Vito and paired an automatic torque-converter transmission with a center differential. Mercedes-Benz specified a 45:55 torque split between the front and rear axles, favoring the rear.

Electronic 4ETS traction control worked with ESP and ASR. When a wheel lost grip, the system could brake it individually and direct drive toward wheels with more traction. Mercedes-Benz likened 4ETS’s effect to three differential locks; that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independently verified comparison.
Which Vito drivetrain suited which work?
Mercedes-Benz presented the three drivetrains as options for different operating profiles. These are broad manufacturer use-case descriptions, not universal rules: an operator’s load, route, surface and vehicle configuration all matter.

The cited material does not establish a same-configuration independent comparison of payload, towing ratings, operating cost or safety among these drivetrains.
What engine and performance figures did the 2015 Vito 119 BlueTEC 4×4 have?
The first announced version used a 2.15-litre four-cylinder diesel rated at 140 kW (190 CV) and 440 Nm. It came with a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and ECO start/stop. Mercedes-Benz published a top speed of 199 km/h, combined NEDC consumption of 6.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 169 g/km. These are manufacturer-published 2015 specifications, not present-day figures or independent test results.

The engine’s SCR system used AdBlue injection. Mercedes-Benz said it met the then-upcoming Euro 6 standard; that statement belongs to the 2015 launch context.
What body styles and dimensions were listed?
The 2015 French release listed the Vito 4×4 in panel van, Mixto and Tourer body types, with compact, long and extra-long body lengths. It gave a height of 1.91 m and an approximate weight increase of 50 kg over the rear-wheel-drive version. Mercedes-Benz presented the low roof as allowing access to most parking facilities; the claim does not mean every garage or structure will accommodate it.

Were other Vito 4×4 versions planned?
The 2015 release identified the 119 BlueTEC as the first version and said 100 kW and 120 kW versions were expected in the following months. That announcement records Mercedes-Benz’s rollout plan at the time; it does not establish when or where those versions subsequently became available. Current stock, pricing and market availability are not established here.
