Actor Mena Massoud alleged in a 2019 lawsuit that a defect caused the front right wheel of his Tesla Model 3 to come off before a crash in Los Angeles. Tesla disputed that account: a spokesperson said the wheel was torn off when the car hit a tree. The reporting available here does not establish which sequence occurred or prove that a defect caused the crash.
What Massoud alleged happened
In a lawsuit reported on May 31, 2019, Massoud alleged that manufacturing and design defects in his Tesla Model 3 caused the crash. According to TMZ’s account of the complaint, he said the front right wheel crumpled and came off while he was changing lanes on Hollywood Boulevard. The car then left the sidewalk and struck a tree. TMZ reported that Massoud had bought the car in September 2018 and that the suit alleged personal injuries and a totaled vehicle. TMZ’s May 31, 2019 report
The Center for Auto Safety described the alleged failure as a suspension defect and reported that, according to the complaint, Massoud’s insurer Geico had found Tesla responsible. What Tesla said
A Tesla spokesperson, quoted by the Center for Auto Safety, said the “wheel was torn off because the driver crashed into a tree at high speed.” Tesla’s reported explanation reverses the sequence alleged in the complaint: in its account, the tree impact caused the wheel to separate, rather than a wheel failure causing the crash.

Was a defect proven?
No. The cited reports present competing accounts and do not establish whether the front right wheel separated before impact or as a result of it. A June 1, 2019 TN report specifically noted that the timing was unclear. TN’s June 1, 2019 report
These reports do not establish that an independent engineer, regulator, or court confirmed a defect in Massoud’s car. They also do not provide evidence that resolves the competing accounts, such as an official investigation or a court finding.

What is known about the lawsuit’s outcome?
The cited sources establish that a lawsuit was reported in 2019, but they do not establish whether it was later settled, dismissed, or otherwise resolved. TMZ said Tesla had not responded to its request for comment when its May 31 report was published; the Center for Auto Safety later reported the spokesperson’s response.
