The Pea Car was a real, one-off vehicle built for a Birds Eye frozen-peas commercial—not a production model. London effects and modelmaking company Asylum designed and built it to fall apart on camera, using a Honda engine and a body made from molded fiberglass panels.

What is the Pea Car?

The Pea Car was a custom promotional vehicle created for a Birds Eye frozen-peas advertisement. Its pea-like green body was made to shed panels as it drove, turning the car itself into part of the commercial’s visual joke and message about frozen peas.

In the ad concept described by its builder, a battered-looking pea car loses its bodywork before a fresh replacement appears from a refrigerated Birds Eye truck. The contrast between the car that falls apart and the fresh one helped connect the gag to the product.

Who built the Birds Eye Pea Car?

London-based effects and modelmaking company Asylum built the vehicle. Its project page credits advertising agency BBH and production company Blink. The British Arrows archive lists a “Birdseye, Frozen peas — Pea Car” entry in its 2005 records and credits Mark Mason and Conor Breen at Asylum for model making. The award archive confirms the campaign’s period and craft credits; it is not a technical specification sheet.

How was the Pea Car made?

Asylum says the team designed the car in 3D, used the design to machine the body shapes, then molded those shapes to create fiberglass panels. The brief required the car to fall apart as it drove, so the unusual bodywork was designed around the commercial’s effect rather than ordinary production-car durability.

Asylum confirms that the vehicle had a Honda engine. Some secondary accounts describe a heavily modified off-road go-kart chassis, Beetle headlights, Lancia indicators and other bespoke parts, but Asylum’s project page does not verify those component origins. They should be treated as reported details, not confirmed factory specifications.

How fast could the Pea Car go?

Asylum, the builder, gives the car a top speed of over 60 mph on its project page. That differs from the approximately 50 mph reported by Retro Kimmer in 2015 and in a 2010 Flickr caption by photographer Peter Bromley. The sources do not explain the discrepancy, so the builder’s stated figure and the lower secondary reports should remain distinct.

Retro Kimmer and Bromley also report a weight of about 750 kg. That figure is not confirmed on Asylum’s project page, and no primary technical specification sheet is established in the available record.

Can you buy the Pea Car or see it today?

The available accounts describe the Pea Car as a one-off, not a retail vehicle. Secondary sources say it was not for sale. Autoevolution and OBDeleven report that it is at a Unilever facility in Walton-on-Thames, but there is no current primary confirmation of that location or information establishing public visitor access. Its present location and whether it can be seen remain unverified.
