Mazda rated it at 140 PS net at 7,000 rpm when the model was introduced, and described it as the world’s smallest-displacement mass-produced V6 at the time. That engine was the K8, part of a broader Mazda K-series family that also included 2.0- and 2.5-liter V6s.
Did the Mazda MX-3 really have a V6?
It did. Mazda’s corporate history identifies the Eunos Presso—also known as the MX-3 and Eunos 30X—as a two-door, four-seat coupe with a 1.8-liter DOHC V6. Mazda lists the engine’s output as 140 PS net at 7,000 rpm in its model-introduction entry. The rating is a manufacturer-published historical specification, not a current test result. Mazda also called the 1.8-liter engine the smallest-displacement mass-produced V6 in the world at that time. That is a period-specific manufacturer claim; it should not be read as a statement about the smallest V6 ever built or about engines available today.

“K-series” refers to a family, not a single engine. The SAE 920677 paper record describes three DOHC V6s: the 1.8-liter K8, 2.0-liter KF and 2.5-liter KL. It names the Mazda 626, MX-6 and MX-3 among the vehicles associated with the engines discussed. The record supports the family and application overview, but not a complete market-by-market fitment chart. SAE 920677 paper record

The SAE record establishes these rounded displacements and codes. More precise cubic-centimeter figures appear in a secondary reference, but they are not needed to identify the family and should not be treated as factory-confirmed specifications here.
How did the K V6 fit into Mazda’s range?
The MX-3 made the K8’s unusual combination easy to notice: a V6 in a compact, four-seat coupe. The family extended beyond that car, however. SAE 920677 discusses K-series engines in the 626, MX-6 and MX-3, while Mazda’s own history records V6 DOHC offerings for the MX-6.

For the MX-6, Mazda’s history page lists 2.5-liter 200 PS and 2.0-liter 160 PS V6 DOHC engines. Those figures belong to the historical entry and should not be generalized to every year, trim or market. Mazda’s 1990–1999 history
What can—and can’t—be said about its specifications?
The available evidence gives a clear headline figure for the MX-3’s K8, but it does not establish a reliable, complete comparison of every K8, KF and KL version. Ratings, torque, induction details and availability can vary by model year and market; the figures should be checked against factory documentation for the specific car.

- MX-3 K8: Mazda states 1.8 liters and 140 PS net at 7,000 rpm for the model-introduction entry.
- MX-6 V6s: Mazda’s history page lists the 2.5-liter at 200 PS and the 2.0-liter at 160 PS, without establishing that those outputs apply universally across markets and years.
- Other comparisons: The available sources do not establish a full set of torque, transmission, model-year or market-specific specifications for all three engine codes.
That distinction matters when comparing cars or identifying an engine: confirm the engine code, vehicle, model year and market together rather than assuming a family-wide specification.

An MX-3 service manual is a plausible starting point for maintenance research: the index located for an MX-3 service manual includes a dedicated K8 engine section. It is not evidence that the manual covers every K-series engine or every market. Check the manual’s year, market and engine applicability before relying on it. MX-3 Service Manual index, B2-2
