For North American Mazda3s, the available generation-level ranking identifies 2009–2013 as its weakest group. That is a complaint-based ranking, not a sedan-only failure rate or proof that every car in that generation is less dependable than every other Mazda3. The same source ranks its partial 2019–2020 group highest, while Consumer Reports offers a separate, survey-based view that is better suited to evaluating individual model years.
How the Mazda3 generations rank in the available data
The generation rankings below come from MazdaProblems’ North American generation page. Its ordinal positions are results within that site’s own system, not standardized reliability scores. The site groups sedan and hatchback model years together, so none of these positions establishes a sedan-only ranking.
| Generation | Model years shown | MazdaProblems rank | What the ranking supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 2004–2008 | 33rd of 36 | A low position in the site’s generation ranking; not a measured probability of failure. Source: MazdaProblems |
| Second | 2009–2013 | 35th of 36 | The weakest of the four Mazda3 groups shown by this source. Source: MazdaProblems |
| Third | 2014–2018 | 32nd of 36 | Ranks above the first and second groups, but the cited material does not establish a comparable sedan-only year-by-year result. Source: MazdaProblems |
| Fourth, partial span | 2019–2020 shown | 12th of 36 | Highest position among the four displayed groups, but the page’s year range is incomplete for the full generation. Source: MazdaProblems |
Read this as a ranking of the groups and years displayed by that source—not a complete ordering of every Mazda3 sedan through the 2026 model year. The generation page’s fourth-generation span stops at 2020, and the inspected material does not supply a full, comparable sedan-only Consumer Reports series to settle the order across generations.
What the rankings measure—and what they do not
Complaint-based generation ranking
MazdaProblems labels 2009–2013 the least reliable generation and displays 35th of 36. Its page also gives that group 291 complaints and a PainRank of 18.92; the first generation has 121 complaints and PainRank 9.97, and the third has 113 and 9.88. These are totals and index values accumulated in that site’s system. They are not adjusted for how many vehicles were sold, how long they were on the road, or how many miles they covered, so they cannot be treated as the chance that a particular sedan will have a problem.

Consumer Reports owner-survey view
Consumer Reports describes reliability histories built from subscriber reports across 20 trouble spots, comparing a vehicle with others from the same model year. Its reliability FAQ says the latest survey described there covered about 380,000 vehicles overall; that is the broad survey pool, not the number of Mazda3 owners. Consumer Reports’ 2022 Mazda3 page describes that model as much more reliable than same-year cars and says its score is based on its latest subscriber survey of 2022 Mazda3 owners. That is a model-year observation, not a definitive reliability rank for every sedan in a generation.
For new or data-sparse model years, Consumer Reports says its predictions can draw on the manufacturer’s track record, the prior generation, or vehicles sharing components. That means a recent model-year prediction and an older model year’s accumulated owner reports may not be based on the same depth of direct data. What to know about each generation
2004–2008: first generation
The first-generation Mazda3 was sold as a sedan and hatchback. Consumer Reports’ 2005 overview describes 2004 as a redesign year and notes responsive handling and a refined four-cylinder engine, alongside a noisy cabin and tight rear seat. Those are characteristics, not a reliability verdict; condition and maintenance records matter more when judging a specific older car. Consumer Reports 2005 Mazda3 overview
2009–2013: second generation
This is the weakest group in MazdaProblems’ displayed ranking. The label is a reason to investigate candidates carefully, not a blanket rule to reject every car in the range. The ranking does not tell you whether a particular sedan was maintained well or how it compares with a specific, inspected alternative.

2014–2018: third generation
MazdaProblems places this group 32nd of 36. The available Consumer Reports material does not provide a complete sedan-only, year-by-year series that would support a more precise comparative position.
2019–2020 shown: fourth generation
The generation page ranks the span it displays 12th of 36, the highest position among these four groups. Because it shows only 2019–2020, do not extend that rank to later fourth-generation model years without a comparable source and data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check safety equipment and recalls on the car you are considering
For U.S.-market 2004–2008 Mazda3s, Consumer Reports advises looking for cars equipped with available curtain airbags: it says the car performed poorly in an IIHS side-impact test without them. Its account says side and curtain airbags became standard for model year 2009. Stability control became standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims starting in 2007, according to the same source. Equipment can vary by year and trim, so verify what is actually fitted to the individual vehicle.
Use Mazda’s VIN lookup to check for open recalls. Mazda says safety recall repairs are free through authorized Mazda dealers. A model-year recall list cannot tell you whether a particular car is affected or whether its repair has been completed; check the VIN and confirm the status with Mazda or a dealer. How to compare two used Mazda3 sedans
Use the same checks for each candidate rather than choosing from the generation label alone:
- Identity: Confirm exact model year, sedan body style, engine, transmission, and trim.
- History: Compare mileage and available service documentation.
- Condition: Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection; a broad generation ranking cannot assess an individual car.
- Safety and recalls: Verify installed equipment and check open recall status by VIN.
- Ratings: Note the source and year of any reliability rating, and do not treat complaint totals as failure rates.
The ranking is useful as context: one source flags 2009–2013 as its weakest group, while its partial 2019–2020 group ranks best among those shown. The evidence does not establish a definitive sedan-only reliability order, so the specific car’s history, condition, equipment, and VIN record should guide a purchase decision.
