Mazda’s next combustion engine is SKYACTIV-Z, a 2.5-liter gasoline inline-four still in development. Mazda plans to pair it with a hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. The company presents the engine as a new step in its combustion-engine program—not a production engine with published specifications or verified vehicle results.

What is Mazda’s SKYACTIV-Z engine?

SKYACTIV-Z is Mazda’s planned 2.5-liter gasoline inline-four. The company describes it as the next stage in a roadmap that includes gasoline SKYACTIV-G, gasoline SKYACTIV-X and diesel SKYACTIV-D/e-SKYACTIV-D. Mazda dates SKYACTIV-G to 2011 and SKYACTIV-X to 2019; its 2025 roadmap places the planned SKYACTIV-Z step in 2027. Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology overview provides the broader family context.

In its 2025 Integrated Report, Mazda calls SKYACTIV-Z the final step in its roadmap toward an ideal internal-combustion engine. That is Mazda’s framing of its development program, not an independently established endpoint for combustion technology.

How is SKYACTIV-Z different from SKYACTIV-X?

The two engines are connected by SPCCI: Spark Controlled Compression Ignition. Mazda says SKYACTIV-X brought SPCCI into commercial use in 2019. In SKYACTIV-X, spark ignition controls compression ignition in a lean mixture; Mazda says SKYACTIV-Z is intended to broaden SPCCI’s operating area. The company’s stated goal is high thermal efficiency across engine speeds while maintaining output as emissions requirements tighten.

Mazda has not published complete calibration details for SKYACTIV-Z in the cited material. It should not be described as a diesel or as an engine that eliminates spark ignition. The design details and operating range of a production version remain unconfirmed.

Will the next Mazda CX-5 be a hybrid?

Mazda plans to combine SKYACTIV-Z with its hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. The announcement establishes a company plan, not a confirmed production specification: Mazda has not disclosed the complete powertrain, performance figures or fuel-economy ratings in the cited sources. The Mazda newsroom announcement also describes the CX-5 timing as a plan.

  • Suggest Replace with Cabin Air Filter CPJ6X (KD45-61-J6X)

This pairing is central to Mazda’s approach: the future it describes is not simply combustion instead of electrification, but a new combustion engine working within a hybrid system.

What emissions standards is SKYACTIV-Z targeting?

Mazda says the development program is intended to address Euro 7 requirements in Europe and LEV4 and Tier 4 in North America. Those are targets, not proof of certification. The cited company sources do not establish that a production SKYACTIV-Z has completed emissions certification or been independently tested against those standards.

Likewise, Mazda’s stated aims for fuel efficiency and driving performance are development goals. No cited production-vehicle test establishes SKYACTIV-Z’s real-world fuel economy, power or emissions performance. Mazda’s March 2025 engineering interview discusses its technical direction but does not supply production specifications.

Could SKYACTIV-Z influence Mazda’s other engines?

Mazda says it intends to apply combustion improvements from SKYACTIV-Z to inline-six engines in its large-product range and to use the work in rotary-engine emissions development. The cited sources do not give a confirmed production timetable for those applications, so they should be read as intended technology transfers rather than announced engine launches.

Mazda has also discussed carbon-negative combustion as a future possibility. That is not a demonstrated outcome of SKYACTIV-Z, and the cited material does not show that the engine is carbon-negative.

Milestone Mazda’s reported detail How to interpret it
SKYACTIV-G Mazda dates its introduction to 2011. Engineer Masahisa Yamakawa said the team raised its compression ratio to 14:1. Mazda’s historical account of the debut Demio/Mazda2 cited 30 km/liter on Japan’s 10–15 test mode. The 30 km/liter figure is a historical company account using an older Japanese test mode, not a current EPA or WLTP rating or a real-world result. Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G account.
SKYACTIV-X Mazda dates its commercial use of SPCCI to 2019. Its 2025 report says the modeling and AI-supported development process took less than one-third of SKYACTIV-G development time. The development-time comparison is Mazda’s own account, not an independently audited study. Mazda’s 2025 Integrated Report.
SKYACTIV-Z Mazda describes a 2.5-liter gasoline inline-four under development, with a planned hybrid pairing in the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. Production specifications, completed certification and independently verified vehicle results are not established in the cited sources. Mazda newsroom announcement.

Mazda’s Integrated Report also estimates that conventional development methods would have required 16,000 times the SKYACTIV-G development hours to achieve SPCCI conformity. This is the company’s estimate of hypothetical development effort, not a measured engine-performance result. Mazda 2025 Integrated Report.

What Mazda says about its combustion strategy

Masahisa Yamakawa of Mazda’s Technical Research Center explained the company’s rationale in a March 2025 interview: “When we consider Mazda’s size and areas of expertise, exploring the possibilities of internal combustion engines before taking steps toward electrification was the most logical path.” This is Mazda’s account of its strategy, not an independent assessment of the company’s choices.

For readers comparing future powertrains, the meaningful distinction is between what Mazda has announced and what has been demonstrated: SKYACTIV-Z is a planned combustion engine with a planned hybrid application, but its production specifications and measured vehicle results have not been established in the cited sources.
