Neither badge guarantees a better car. Choose by the specific engine, transmission, market specification, condition and service history—and, for an FD, whether you can get a rotary specialist to assess it.
What separates the RX-7 FD and Supra Mk4?
They offer different engine layouts and ownership considerations, not simply two versions of the same idea. Mazda’s third-generation RX-7 uses a 13B two-rotor rotary engine with sequential twin turbos. Mazda also describes the FD’s front-midship layout, 50:50 weight distribution and aluminum double-wishbone suspension at all four corners. Mazda’s history of the RX-7 records 255 PS for the FD’s 13B configuration.

The A80 Supra gives buyers a choice between the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE inline-six and the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE inline-six. Engine output and transmission availability depend on the year, market and configuration, so “Supra Mk4” alone is not enough to establish a car’s specification.
Which engine and specification are you comparing?
Toyota’s published figures illustrate why market context matters. Its US historical account gives different outputs from its Japanese launch announcement; the figures below are not directly interchangeable because the markets and rating units differ.

| RX-7 FD, 13B sequential-turbo | 255 PS | Mazda’s corporate history covering 1991 |
These are source-specific published specifications, not a complete guide to every production year, export market or modified car. Before comparing two examples, confirm the Supra’s year, engine, transmission and original market, and check the RX-7’s exact specification and history. Do not assume that a badge or imported-car registration tells the whole story.
Which one fits the driving experience you want?
Choose the RX-7 FD for the rotary and chassis concept
The FD is the more distinctive choice if the appeal is a two-rotor engine, sequential turbos and Mazda’s documented front-midship, 50:50 chassis brief. That engineering description is not a guarantee of how a particular old or modified car will drive: condition, setup and prior work matter.

Choose the Supra for an inline-six and a broader version choice
The Supra is the better fit if you specifically want a 2JZ inline-six and are prepared to distinguish the naturally aspirated GE from the twin-turbo GTE. Verify the transmission and original-market specification on the individual car rather than relying on a general Mk4 specification.

What should you inspect before buying?
RX-7 FD: get a rotary-specific compression assessment
Ask for maintenance records and arrange an inspection with a technician experienced in Mazda rotary engines. Have that technician conduct and interpret a compression check using the factory procedure appropriate to the car. The available reference reproduces 1993 factory service-manual material; it does not establish one universal pass/fail number for every FD, test setup or regional version. A generic compression reading should not be treated as a definitive rotary diagnosis. The reproduced 1993 RX-7 factory service-manual material includes a dedicated compression-check procedure.
Supra Mk4: verify the exact car and its parts path
Confirm the engine, transmission, model year and original market against the car’s documentation and specification. For replacement parts, Toyota UK’s archive describes heritage-parts reproduction and sales for A70 and A80 Supras, but that does not guarantee stock or fitment for a particular car. Check availability with the relevant supplier for your region and exact chassis. Toyota UK’s heritage-parts announcement is a starting point, not confirmation that a specific component is currently available.

How should you think about price and ownership?
A dated RX-7 valuation can provide context, but it is not a live asking price or a comparison with the Supra. Hagerty’s March 19, 2024 report for a 1993 Mazda RX-7 listed guide values of $80,300 in concours condition, $56,000 excellent, $39,700 good and $23,500 fair. These are Hagerty’s dated condition-based figures, not 2026 values and not a valuation of every FD. Read Hagerty’s 1993 Mazda RX-7 valuation report.

No directly comparable current-market valuation or ownership-cost study is established for these two cars. Compare cars with similar condition, originality, specification and documentation in the market where you plan to buy; do not use the RX-7 figures above as a proxy for Supra prices.
Quick Recap
Which one should you buy?
- Pick the RX-7 FD if the rotary character and compact, balanced chassis are central to what you want, and you have access to specialist inspection and care.
- Pick the Supra Mk4 if you want the 2JZ inline-six platform and can identify the engine, transmission and market specification that suit you.
- Walk away from either example if its condition, records or specification cannot be verified to your satisfaction. A sound individual car matters more than choosing the theoretically perfect badge.
