The Mazda MX-30 R-EV drives its wheels with an electric motor, while a small rotary engine generates electricity when needed. That setup can make short, regularly charged trips feel like EV motoring and remove the need to stop and charge on longer journeys—but the battery is small, the generator can be noisy, and fuel use rises once the battery is depleted. It suits drivers whose everyday journeys fit within its electric range and who can plug in often; it is less convincing as a long-distance car or for owners without dependable charging.
How the Mazda MX-30 R-EV works
Mazda introduced the e-Skyactiv R-EV in Europe on January 13, 2023, describing it as a series plug-in hybrid. Its rotary engine turns a generator; an electric motor propels the car. The engine does not mechanically drive the wheels, so the R-EV is not a conventional hybrid in which the combustion engine can directly provide wheel power. Mazda’s announcement put it plainly: “On top of this, the entire driving range is motor-powered.” Mazda’s announcement specifies a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 50-litre fuel tank. The car has Normal, EV and Charge modes, plus a 1,500 W power-supply function. CompleteCar.ie’s review identifies the rotary unit as an 830 cc, 75 hp generator and the electric motor as a 125 kW (170 hp) unit.
The trade-off is straightforward: the R-EV carries a smaller battery than the battery-electric MX-30, whose pack is 35.5 kWh, but adds a petrol tank and generator for journeys beyond the battery’s reach. It is most useful when the owner can charge regularly and reserve petrol for longer trips. If it is rarely plugged in, the car has to rely more on its generator, undermining the appeal of its electric-first layout.

| 85 km electric range | Announced battery-electric range | Mazda Motor Corporation, 2023; manufacturer figure. Mazda announcement |
| Up to 53 miles electric; up to 390 miles total | UK guide comparison figures | Mazda UK, 2025; manufacturer claims, not guaranteed real-world distances. Mazda says results vary with starting battery charge, weather, driving style, load, accessories and heating or air conditioning. Mazda UK guide |
| 65 km electric range | Distance travelled electrically before the generator started | ADAC Ecotest result for its tested car; not a universal figure. ADAC Ecotest |
| 26.3 kWh/100 km | Electricity consumption during electric operation | ADAC Ecotest result for its tested car. ADAC Ecotest |
| 10.1 l/100 km | Mixed-driving fuel consumption after the battery was depleted | ADAC Ecotest result for its tested car; the test also reported 7.7 l/100 km in town, 9.3 l/100 km on country roads and 13.0 l/100 km on the motorway. ADAC Ecotest |
| 15.9 kWh/100 km plus 3.9 l/100 km over the first 100 km | Combined electricity and petrol result starting with a full battery | ADAC Ecotest result; this starts from a charged battery and is not directly comparable with depleted-battery operation. ADAC Ecotest |
ADAC’s 65 km result fell short of Mazda’s 85 km manufacturer figure. ADAC also notes that low temperatures can cause the generator to start before the battery is fully depleted. Its tested version charged at up to 11 kW on three-phase AC and up to 36 kW on CCS DC; those are test-specific figures, not a guarantee for every trim or market. ADAC’s test details are a more useful reference for that particular test than for predicting every owner’s results.
What it is like to drive and live with
Comfortable, familiar electric delivery
CompleteCar.ie describes the R-EV as smooth in its electric delivery, though restrained by current EV performance expectations. Stuff’s reviewer praised its appearance, UK-road manners, build quality and straightforward infotainment. Together, those assessments suggest a familiar, well-finished small crossover experience rather than a performance-focused EV.

Modest pace and a noticeable generator
Stuff’s reviewer found acceleration modest and the rotary generator’s variable whir intrusive when it started. CompleteCar.ie also regarded the generator’s sound as a weak point. The car remains motor-driven, but that does not make the generator inaudible: when it runs, its sound is part of the cabin experience. How often that happens depends on charge, conditions and use.
Rear doors require a compromise
The rear-hinged back doors are a distinctive design choice with a practical cost. Stuff’s reviewer found they could not be opened until the front doors were open, making repeated access awkward for passengers or cargo. Anyone who regularly carries rear-seat passengers should try the entry and exit routine before choosing the car.

Charging can change the ownership experience
In Stuff’s reviewer’s week, a home 7 kW charger added roughly 30 miles at a time, and the reviewer did not buy petrol during a week dominated by short runs. That is one person’s experience, not a typical range or efficiency result. It does illustrate why charging access matters: frequent charging can keep routine journeys on battery power, whereas a depleted battery brings generator use and the less favourable fuel figures seen in ADAC’s test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is the MX-30 R-EV best suited to?
The R-EV makes the clearest case for someone whose everyday travel is usually within the car’s usable electric range, who can charge at home or reliably in public, and who sometimes needs to continue beyond that range without planning a charging stop. The petrol generator is a backup for distance, not evidence that the car will be economical when driven for long periods with a depleted battery.

- Consider it if: your routine journeys are short enough to charge between them, you value electric-motor delivery, and longer trips are occasional.
- Think carefully if: you cannot plug in regularly, spend much of your time on motorways, need brisk acceleration, or often carry rear passengers who must get in and out easily.
- Compare alternatives on: real electric range in your climate, fuel consumption after battery depletion, charging access and compatibility, generator noise, performance, rear-seat access, and local model availability and equipment.
The available reviews do not provide a controlled comparison with named rivals, so a direct ranking against another plug-in hybrid or battery EV is not established here. Mazda UK’s October 2025 guide identifies Type 2 and CCS connectors, but does not establish that a Type 2 cable is included with every trim. Check the specific car’s market, model year, equipment and included charging kit before purchase. Availability can change by market; verify current local listings with Mazda rather than assuming the model is on sale or discontinued.
