There is no single kind of truck behind the phrase “changing freight.” The 21 vehicles in this roundup span battery-electric road trucks, autonomous-driving programs, mine haulage, concepts and a luxury specialty vehicle. Some are working on defined routes; others are development platforms or announced plans. Comparing them fairly means asking what job each is built for—and how far it is from deployment.
What does “21 trucks changing freight” actually include?
It is a tour of different ideas, not a list of 21 production trucks that are all luxurious, electric and autonomous. Those labels describe different things: a driver environment, a powertrain, or a vehicle’s ability to operate without a human driver in some conditions. A concept may demonstrate a design direction without being available to buy, while an autonomous mine truck works in a very different environment from a highway tractor.
The original Gadget Review roundup, published April 16, 2025, brings together road-going trucks, prototypes and concepts, autonomy programs, mine haul trucks, a land-speed-record truck and the Furrion Elysium luxury vehicle. Those entries do not all perform freight work. This distinction matters: a specialized luxury vehicle may be striking, but it is not evidence of a new commercial freight capability.
Which electric trucks target road freight?
Freightliner eCascadia: battery-electric, short-haul work
Freightliner positions the Class 8 eCascadia for short-haul routes. Its current product page lists typical range options of 155, 220 or 230 miles, depending on the configuration. Freightliner also gives an approximate 90-minute charge time from 0% to 80%. These are manufacturer figures, not guaranteed results for every route: payload, weather, driving conditions, charger and truck configuration affect real-world range and charging time.

That makes the eCascadia a duty-cycle decision. Operators need to match its available range and charging schedule to their routes and depot infrastructure; the range figures alone do not establish how well it suits a particular operation.
Mercedes-Benz eActros 600: an electric long-haul truck
Mercedes-Benz Trucks describes the eActros 600 as a long-haul electric truck. That intended use distinguishes it from a model positioned specifically for shorter routes, but it does not make the two directly comparable on range or operating cost: the evidence summarized here does not establish a like-for-like range, payload or cost comparison.

Any life-cycle emissions comparison for the eActros 600 depends on the electricity mix and the assumptions used in the comparison. An emissions claim without those conditions would not describe the truck’s impact in every market.
How far along are autonomous highway trucks?
“Autonomous” can refer to a system under development, a platform designed to support future autonomous operation, or a truck operating on a specific route. These stages should not be treated as equivalent to broad commercial availability.

Volvo VNL Autonomous: freight lanes between Dallas and Houston
Volvo Autonomous Solutions describes the VNL Autonomous as a long-haul self-driving truck platform and says it has hit the road on freight lanes between Dallas and Houston. Volvo also describes redundant systems for steering, braking, communication, computation, power management, energy storage and vehicle motion. These are Volvo’s descriptions of the platform and its operations; they do not, on their own, establish general availability or operation on other routes.
Freightliner Cascadia and Torc: development platform with a 2027 target
In an April 16, 2025 announcement, Daimler Truck said it had delivered a development version based on the fifth-generation Freightliner Cascadia to Torc, and described the truck as having redundant safety features. Daimler Truck and Torc said they aimed to enter the US market with SAE Level 4 autonomous trucks by 2027. That date was a target announced by the companies, not confirmation that a commercial launch occurred.

This autonomous-ready Cascadia development program is distinct from the battery-electric eCascadia. Sharing the Cascadia name does not mean the two trucks share a powertrain or deployment purpose.
SANY and Pony.ai: a dated development announcement
On August 12, 2025, SANY Group announced that its fourth-generation autonomous heavy-duty truck, co-developed with Pony.ai, had a battery capacity exceeding 400 kWh. The company described mass-production readiness and future commercial operations as plans. The announcement establishes what SANY said at that time, not that those future milestones were subsequently achieved.

Why is autonomous mine haulage a different category?
Komatsu’s FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System is used with the 930E-5AT, an electric-drive ultra-class haul truck built for mine haulage. Komatsu reported on April 21, 2026 that the 1,000th commissioned autonomous ultra-class haul truck was a 930E-5AT at Barrick’s Nevada Gold Mines operation. Komatsu gave that truck a payload of 290 metric tons.
That milestone concerns an operating mine, not autonomous highway freight. A mine haul truck’s payload and work environment cannot be ranked directly against a road tractor’s freight capacity: the vehicles serve different jobs and operate under different conditions.

For a real fleet decision, compare vehicles that serve the same duty cycle. Check route length and terrain, payload and configuration, energy or refueling needs, charging access, driver environment, and deployment stage. Do not compare a mine truck’s payload with a highway truck’s, or treat a company’s future target as an operating capability.
What does “luxurious” mean in this roundup?
Comfort and luxury are not technical categories that can be inferred from a futuristic exterior or an advanced powertrain. The roundup includes the Furrion Elysium, a luxury specialty vehicle, but that does not make it a freight truck. For commercial models, claims about the cab should be tied to documented features; the evidence summarized here does not establish a consistent set of luxury specifications across the 21 entries.
