LIN is a low-cost serial network for coordinating distributed automotive mechatronics. SAE J2602 is not a competing bus: it sets additional implementation requirements for vehicle LIN networks to improve interoperability. Together, scheduled LIN communication and J2602 requirements give engineers a defined way to design and verify networked vehicle components.
What LIN does in an automotive network
The Local Interconnect Network (LIN) is designed to connect relatively low-cost mechatronic nodes that need to exchange control information. Its specification covers the protocol, transmission medium, development-tool interface, and software-programming interfaces. It is intended for distributed automotive applications where a scheduled serial network is suitable, rather than as a replacement for every in-vehicle network. The LIN 2.2A specification package describes that purpose.
LIN 2.2A specifies bit rates from 1 to 20 kbit/s. That upper figure is a protocol capability, not a promise that a particular vehicle bus runs at 20 kbit/s. Hans-Christian von der Wense’s 2000 SAE paper identifies electromagnetic interference (EMI) as the reason for the upper limit. The actual configured rate depends on the implementation and application.
How LIN communication works
A LIN transfer is organized as a frame with a header and a response. In the LIN 2.2A format, the header contains a break field, a sync byte, and a protected identifier; the response carries data and a checksum. The header identifies the frame, while the response contains the transmitted information and error-checking value.

Schedule tables make communication predictable
A schedule table defines which frames are sent and when. This lets a network coordinate periodic signal transfers instead of relying on nodes to contend unpredictably for access. The schedule is therefore a key part of the network configuration, not merely a list of messages.
From network description to node software
In a practical development flow, engineers describe the LIN cluster in a LIN Description File (LDF). Microchip’s LIN overview explains that development tools can use this description to generate driver code and headers for node development. The LDF and schedule help align the configuration across the network; they do not replace implementation or verification work.

What SAE J2602 adds to LIN
SAE J2602 specifies requirements for vehicle LIN implementations; it does not define a different bus. The current SAE Mobilus listing is J2602-1_202510, “LIN Network for Vehicle Applications,” dated October 1, 2025. SAE says this edition is based on ISO 17987:2016 and adds requirements not present in that ISO baseline, with fault-tolerant operation and network topology among the examples.
“The goal of SAE J2602-1 is to improve the interoperability and interchangeability of LIN devices within a network by adding additional requirements that are not present in ISO 17987:2016 (e.g., fault tolerant operation, network topology, etc.).”

Kvaser Hybrid 2xCAN/LIN Flexible dual-channel interface that allows each channel to be individually assigned as CAN or LIN
- Supports high speed CAN (ISO 11898-2) and LIN 2.2A up to 20kbit/s (ISO 17987 Part 1-7)
- Transmits up to 20000 messages per CAN channel
- Supports CAN FD up to 5Mbit/s (depending on proper physical layer implementation)
- Quick and easy plug-and-play installation
- Support CAN 2.0 A and CAN 2.0 B active
That statement is from SAE International’s J2602-1_202510 catalog entry. SAE also notes that the listed document uses “commander” and “responder” in place of the older “master” and “slave” terms. Older documents and tools may still use the legacy vocabulary.
The public catalog entry establishes the edition and broad scope, but it is not the complete normative standard. Engineers making design or compliance decisions need the full standard for the applicable requirements and values.

How J2602-1, J2602-2, and LIN fit into an engineering workflow
| Element | Role | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| LIN protocol and network description | Defines scheduled frames and the network configuration used to develop communicating nodes. | When creating the cluster configuration, schedule, and node software. |
| SAE J2602-1_202510 | Sets SAE implementation requirements for vehicle LIN networks, based on ISO 17987:2016 with additional requirements. | When designing or assessing an implementation against the applicable SAE requirements. |
| SAE J2602-2_202110 | Specifies conformance tests for devices defined by J2602-1, arranged to correspond to relevant sections of Part 1. | When checking devices against the specified minimum performance level and supporting interoperability. |
SAE’s catalog describes J2602-2_202110 as the conformance-test companion to Part 1. The catalog lists this edition as dated October 1, 2021. Treat the configuration, implementation requirements, and conformance tests as connected but distinct stages: a correctly described schedule is not itself proof that a device conforms.

Here, efficiency is best understood as a design and integration advantage: LIN provides scheduled serial communication for distributed mechatronics, while J2602 adds requirements intended to improve device interoperability and interchangeability. The cited sources do not establish a quantified fuel, energy, cost, or vehicle-efficiency saving, so no such reduction should be inferred from the network’s name or speed.
