Lime’s 2024 pilot tested two different shared electric vehicles: LimeBike, a pedal-assist e-bike with an optional throttle in U.S. cities, and LimeGlider, a seated, pedal-free vehicle with footrests. Lime designed both to feel more approachable to people who may find conventional bikes harder to mount or ride, including women and older adults. The pilots have since moved on: in April 2025, Lime announced a broader rollout, but that dated announcement does not confirm service availability today.
What were LimeBike and LimeGlider?
Despite the headline’s shorthand, only one of the vehicles is a conventional e-bike. LimeBike is a next-generation pedal-assist e-bike intended to complement Lime’s Gen4 model. In U.S. cities, it also has a throttle option. LimeGlider has no pedals: riders sit on a low, padded seat and rest their feet on footrests, in a format Lime likened to a seated ride with scooter-like ease.
| Feature | LimeBike | LimeGlider |
|---|---|---|
| How it moves | Pedal assist, with an optional throttle in U.S. cities | Pedal-free; footrests instead of pedals |
| Riding position | Bike-style riding position | Low, seated position with a larger padded seat |
| Notable design detail | Adjustable seat with an ergonomic clamp; compact feel | Lime says the lower seat contributes to a lower center of gravity |
TechCrunch’s July 2024 reporter said the LimeBike was easier to mount and dismount and felt stable during a test ride. That is one reporter’s impression, not a controlled test of safety or accessibility. The same report noted that LimeBike’s battery sits under the seat, unlike the Gen4’s down-tube battery, and that the new model’s 20-inch wheels are smaller than the Gen4’s 26-inch wheels. TechCrunch’s July 29, 2024 report includes those observations.
What design features did the vehicles share?
Lime highlighted several features common to the two designs: 20-inch wheels, step-through frames, ergonomic grips, secure phone holders, wider and lower front baskets, 2.5-inch tires, and a lower center of gravity. The company said these choices were intended to make the vehicles easier to mount, handle, and use. They are design aims and specifications, not independent proof of improved accessibility, stability, or safety.

Lime also said the vehicles use modular construction and proprietary swappable batteries, with battery infrastructure shared with its Gen4 fleet. Those are fleet-maintenance design choices; they do not mean the batteries or replacement parts are sold to consumers. Lime presented both vehicles as shared fleet options, not retail bikes.
Why was Lime targeting women and older riders?
Lime said the designs were meant to reach people beyond its existing riders. In July 2024 reporting, TechCrunch attributed to Lime the claims that about 70% of its riders were men and the average rider age was 33; the article did not provide the underlying dataset. Lime product executive Jason Parrish told TechCrunch the vehicles were intended to appeal to current riders and reach new ones.

Earlier London findings offer context, but they do not show that LimeBike or LimeGlider caused a change in who rides. A July 2023 report by Steer, commissioned by Lime and based on Lime London service data from January 2019 to March 2023 plus rider survey data, found that 71% of female Lime e-bike riders had not been regular cyclists before using the service, compared with 52% of male riders. In that same report, 73% of female riders said they cycled more often after starting to use Lime e-bikes, compared with 53% of male riders. These figures concern Lime’s London e-bike service generally, not the two newer vehicles or their pilots. Read the Steer report commissioned by Lime.

Lime announced LimeBike pilots in Atlanta and Zurich on July 29, 2024. It said LimeGlider would begin piloting in Seattle in mid-August, with Zurich expected later that summer. TechCrunch reported a planned placement of 200–300 vehicles in each pilot city; that was a reported plan at the time, not confirmation of the number ultimately deployed.

Lime’s July 2024 announcement describes the vehicle designs and initial city plans. For a reader checking where to ride now, those original pilot locations are historical, not a current service map.
Did the pilots work, and what happened after them?
In an April 22, 2025 announcement, Lime said the pilots had concluded and reported two signs of use: over half of Atlanta riders who tried LimeBike returned for another ride within the same week, and LimeGlider riders in Seattle and Zurich frequently took trips longer than 5 kilometers and 15 minutes. Lime did not publish a sample size or an independent evaluation of these specific pilot outcomes in that announcement, so the figures should be read as company-reported results rather than proof of broad rider preference or accessibility gains.
That same announcement described a broader launch of more than 10,000 LimeBike and LimeGlider vehicles in nearly a dozen cities across Europe and North America over the coming weeks and months. Lime listed LimeBike for Turin, Aarhus, Nice, Nyon, Atlanta, and Zurich, and LimeGlider for Denver, Austin, San Francisco, Seattle, and Zurich. The list records Lime’s rollout announcement in April 2025; it does not establish that every city has the vehicles in service now. Baltimore’s city government separately announced on May 30, 2025 that LimeBike would launch there after successful 2024 pilots, citing local bike infrastructure and demand for seated options. Check Lime’s current city service information for present availability. Lime’s April 2025 rollout announcement and Baltimore’s May 2025 announcement document those later developments.
