The Lightning LS-218’s famous 218 mph figure came from a Bonneville run, not an ordinary street ride. Lightning’s current product page advertises up to 244 hp, 220 lb-ft of torque and battery options rated for 188 to 335 miles per charge, but those specifications and range figures are manufacturer claims—not independent test results. The practical picture depends on battery configuration, speed and charging setup.
Where the LS-218’s 218 mph figure comes from
The headline speed belongs to land-speed racing at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. WIRED reported in 2014 that the motorcycle reached 218 mph in a one-time Bonneville run, while also citing an official electric motorcycle record of 215.96 mph. Lightning’s own history page gives 215.907 mph for its 2011 Bonneville record and says the bike was the first electric motorcycle to exceed 200 mph. These are differently attributed figures; they should not be collapsed into one independently verified street top speed. WIRED’s 2014 report and Lightning’s history preserve those distinctions.
A surfaced excerpt from Lightning’s 2024 brochure lists 218 mph (350 kph) specifically with land-speed-record gearing and fairings. That qualification matters: record gearing and fairings are not a description of normal street configuration, and the figure is not evidence that a customer motorcycle will reach that speed on public roads. The 2024 brochure is the source for that qualified figure.
What Lightning currently says the motorcycle offers
Lightning’s current LS-218 product page describes a liquid-cooled IPM motor rated at 180 kW+ / 244 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque, a 380-volt battery system, direct single-speed drive and chain final drive. It lists a 495-pound weight, 32-inch seat height and a 0–60 mph claim of under two seconds. These are manufacturer-published specifications and performance claims, not independently measured results. The LS-218 is therefore an electric superbike, not simply a record-speed machine. Its advertised power and acceleration describe one part of ownership; the battery choice and charging arrangements determine how useful its range claims are for a particular trip.
Range depends on the battery and riding conditions
Lightning’s current page lists three battery choices and corresponding range estimates. The figures are manufacturer estimates, and the cited sources do not establish a shared test protocol that makes them directly comparable with a fixed-speed road test.

A separate Lightning Motors Corporation statement filed with the SEC gives a more specific freeway-speed figure: 140 miles at 65–70 mph. It is a dated company disclosure, not an independent range test, and its conditions differ from the less-qualified estimates on the current product page. The sources do not provide a common test method that reconciles the numbers. The SEC-filed statement is the source for the freeway-speed range.
Charging time and connector options
Lightning’s current product page lists time to 80% rather than a full-charge time. The stated time varies with the charging setup:

These are manufacturer-listed times; the product page does not provide a charge curve or enough detail to treat them as guaranteed times at every station or under all conditions. The surfaced 2024 brochure lists CCS Level 3 DC fast charging, J1772 Level 2 and NACS J3400 compatibility. It identifies a standard 15 kWh pack and options for 20 kWh and a 28.3 kWh Xtreme Fast Charge pack. Those brochure labels and the current web page’s 28 kWh LFCS wording are not identical, so confirm the specific battery and charging equipment for the motorcycle being offered. How the LS-218 reached production
The bike’s record history and its path to customers happened across several milestones. Powersports Business reported that Lightning unveiled the LS-218 at the Quail Lodge Motorcycle Gathering on May 20, 2014. Lightning’s product page says it debuted the model in 2015, while its history page says customer deliveries began in 2016. An unveiling, a stated debut and the start of customer deliveries are distinct events, so these dates do not necessarily conflict. Historical reporting should not be mistaken for current pricing or present-day availability. WIRED reported a price of $38,800 in 2014; that is a historical price, not a current quote.
