There is not enough comparable evidence to rank all five Lexus RX generations reliably from best to worst. The strongest available findings concern specific cohorts: the RX won its segment in J.D. Power’s 2024 dependability study of 2021 vehicles, while Consumer Reports describes the 2025 RX as much more reliable than other cars from that model year. Neither result establishes a five-generation order. For a used-RX buyer, the practical answer is to compare the specific vehicle’s maintenance, inspection results, powertrain and VIN-specific recall status—not rely on a generational ranking that the data cannot support.
Why a definitive RX generation ranking is not supported
A fair ranking needs comparable reliability results for each generation, measured in a consistent way and with enough time on the road to account for ownership exposure. The evidence available here does not provide that. It combines a three-year dependability study, subscriber-reported trouble areas, recall information and complaint totals—different measures that answer different questions.
The Lexus RX has five generations, but counting them does not make their reliability directly comparable. A recall count is not a failure rate; complaint totals are not adjusted for how many vehicles are on the road or how long they have been driven; and a result for one model year cannot stand in for an entire generation.
What the strongest reliability evidence says
J.D. Power: a favorable result for the 2021 RX cohort
Lexus reported that the RX received the Midsize Premium SUV segment award in the 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. The study surveyed 30,595 original purchasers and lessees of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership; responses were collected from August through November 2023. This is a useful result for that cohort, not a measured ranking of all five RX generations. Lexus also reported a brand-level score of 135 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); that figure applies to Lexus as a brand, not to the RX or any RX generation. Lexus’s 2024 study announcement

Consumer Reports: a model-year finding, not a generation verdict
Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on subscriber surveys covering 20 potential trouble spots and model years 2000–2025. Its surfaced 2025 RX assessment calls that model year much more reliable than other cars from the same model year. That comparison is limited to the 2025 model year; it does not establish how the generation compares with earlier RXs. Consumer Reports also lists four NHTSA recalls for the 2025 RX, a separate safety measure rather than a reliability score. Why complaint totals do not settle the question
ForCar displays 62 NHTSA-derived complaints for the RX across 1999–2026, in a snapshot updated August 27, 2026. That is a secondary-source total, not a defect rate or a comparable score for each generation. The accessible year-by-year table covers only 1999–2001, and the page cautions that newer vehicles have had less time to accumulate complaints. It cannot establish a complete generation ranking. How generations differ—and what that does not prove
The fifth-generation RX marks a significant powertrain change: it uses four-cylinder engine options from Toyota’s Dynamic Force family and drops the 3.5-liter V6 used in earlier RX models. That history matters when assessing a particular vehicle, but a different engine layout is not evidence by itself that the newer generation is more or less reliable. Powertrain, model year and condition should therefore be treated as separate comparison dimensions. A buyer can investigate the documented service history and inspection findings of an individual RX; the evidence cited here cannot turn those into a defensible overall order of generations.

Recall check: verify the specific RX by VIN
A Lexus safety recall notice dated June 27, 2024 covers specified 2024–2025 RX and NX vehicles for a front head-restraint retention issue. Lexus stated: “The head restraints for the front driver and passenger seats may be removable without pressing the release button.” The notice estimated approximately 11,400 vehicles across the covered NX and RX population combined—not RX vehicles alone—and said dealers would replace the affected front head restraints at no cost once a remedy became available. How to choose a used Lexus RX without a generation ranking
- Confirm the exact model year and powertrain. Do not treat the fifth-generation four-cylinder options as equivalent to earlier 3.5-liter V6 models, or assume that an observation about one year applies to every year in its generation.
- Review service records. Look for documented maintenance and repairs over the vehicle’s life. A generation label cannot show whether an individual vehicle was maintained consistently.
- Arrange a pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the actual vehicle’s condition and identify issues that a broad model-level result cannot reveal.
- Check open recalls by VIN. Confirm both whether a recall applies and whether its remedy has been completed with Lexus or the relevant official recall lookup.
- Weigh evidence according to what it measures. A three-year dependability award, a subscriber-survey comparison, an official recall and a complaint count are not interchangeable. Use each only for the cohort or question it covers.
