The Lexus LFA and Nissan GT-R pursue performance in fundamentally different ways. The 2012 LFA is a rear-wheel-drive supercar with a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V10; the R35 GT-R launched with a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6, four-wheel drive, and a rear-mounted dual-clutch transaxle. Lexus published a 0–60 mph claim for the LFA, but the available specifications do not establish which car is faster in a like-for-like test.
How the LFA and R35 GT-R differ
| Attribute | Lexus LFA (standard 2012 U.S. announcement) | Nissan GT-R (2007 R35 launch version) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V10 | 3,799 cc (approximately 3.8-liter) twin-turbo V6 |
| Published output | 552 hp at 8,700 rpm | 480 PS |
| Driven wheels and transmission layout | Rear-wheel drive; six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox with paddle shifters | Independent-transaxle four-wheel drive; dual-clutch transmission mounted at the rear |
| Manufacturer-published acceleration and top speed | Lexus claimed 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a 202 mph maximum speed | Not stated in Nissan’s cited 2007 heritage entry |
| Original price and production | $375,000 U.S. MSRP, excluding delivery, processing, and handling fee; 500 cars worldwide | Not stated in Nissan’s cited 2007 heritage entry |
The figures come from different manufacturers’ descriptions of different cars, not a controlled head-to-head test. Power figures also use different units: Lexus gives horsepower, while Nissan gives PS. Read the numbers as published specifications, not as a direct measure of which car performs better in every situation. Lexus’s 2012 LFA announcement and Nissan’s 2007 R35 heritage entry identify the specific versions described here.
Which car is faster?
There is not enough comparable evidence here to declare a winner. Lexus claimed that the standard LFA could reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 202 mph. The cited Nissan heritage entry gives the launch R35’s engine output and layout, but does not provide equivalent acceleration or top-speed figures. Manufacturer claims alone do not show how these cars compare under the same test conditions.
A meaningful direct comparison would need the exact model years and editions, along with test conditions, tires, and driver. The available specifications do not include such a test, so a definitive LFA-versus-GT-R speed verdict would overstate what they establish.

Why their engineering priorities feel different
Lexus LFA: naturally aspirated V10 and rear-wheel drive
The LFA pairs a 4.8-liter V10 with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed automated sequential gearbox. Lexus’s published standard-car figures list 552 hp at 8,700 rpm and 354 lb-ft at 6,800 rpm. Its high engine-speed power rating and V10 configuration distinguish its approach from the GT-R’s turbocharged, four-wheel-drive layout.
Nissan GT-R: turbocharged V6 and four-wheel drive
The 2007 R35 launch car combines a twin-turbo V6 with an independent-transaxle four-wheel-drive system and a dual-clutch transmission mounted at the rear. Nissan engineer Naoki Nakada described the development aim as more than speed: “When we were developing the R35 GT-R, we were not just pursuing speed, but also that satisfying acceleration feeling,” Nissan’s 2021 interview reports. That statement describes the manufacturer’s intent; it is not evidence of a direct performance result against the LFA.

Why the GT-R’s year and edition matter
“Nissan GT-R” does not identify one fixed set of specifications. Nissan’s heritage archive lists the 2007 R35 launch model at 480 PS, while its 2012 GT-R Bolt Special is listed at 550 PS. The Bolt Special is a specific edition, not a substitute for the launch car or every R35. Earlier Skyline GT-R generations are outside this R35 comparison.
For a fair discussion, name the GT-R’s generation, model year, and edition. Comparing a later special edition with standard LFA figures can be useful only if that difference is made explicit. Nissan’s entries cover the 2007 R35 and the 2012 Bolt Special.

The LFA Nürburgring Package is a separate variant
The Nürburgring Package was a limited, track-oriented LFA variant, not the standard car. Lexus announced it in 2010 with 562 hp, a stated 0.15-second shift time, sport-tuned suspension, dedicated high-grip tires, black mesh-type wheels, a larger front spoiler, and a fixed rear wing. Production was limited to 50 of the 500 LFAs.
Lexus announced a $70,000 package price on top of the standard LFA MSRP, with an additional charge for matte black paint. Those are historical announcement figures, not current market prices. Keep the package’s output and equipment separate from standard LFA specifications. Lexus’s Nürburgring Package announcement describes the variant.

How rare was the LFA, and what did it cost new?
Lexus announced a $375,000 U.S. MSRP for the 2012 LFA, excluding delivery, processing, and handling fees, and said the global production run would be 500 cars. Lexus’s history records that the final LFA was built on December 14, 2012, completing that run. These facts explain the car’s limited production and original announced price; they do not establish what an LFA is worth today.
Current asking prices, completed sale prices, maintenance costs, insurance, and parts costs are not established by those production and MSRP announcements. Do not use the original sticker price or the 500-car total as a substitute for current ownership or valuation data. Lexus’s original announcement and its company history document the price, production limit, and final build date.
