The larger 2027 Lexus ES puts more emphasis on comfort and rear-seat space, and its U.S. lineup includes a hybrid and two battery-electric versions. Choose between them first by driving character and powertrain: there is no hybrid or EV IS in the 2027 U.S. lineup.

Which one feels more suited to your driving?
IS: the sport-oriented choice
Lexus describes the 2027 IS as a sport sedan, with a 311-hp 3.5-liter V6 and sport-tuned chassis. It is offered in F SPORT Design and F SPORT grades. Lexus also lists Adaptive Variable Suspension and drive modes, and says RWD models with the eight-speed automatic have a Torsen limited-slip rear differential. These are manufacturer descriptions and specifications, not independent comparative road-test findings.
The IS’s RWD/AWD choice also changes the transmission: Lexus specifies an eight-speed automatic with RWD and a six-speed automatic with AWD. Check the exact grade and configuration when shopping, rather than assuming the equipment or transmission is identical across the line.

ES: comfort, space and powertrain choice
Lexus positions the ES around luxury and comfort, and its larger body is intended to provide more room for rear passengers. The ES is the more varied choice if you want a hybrid or a battery-electric sedan: the 350h is available with FWD or AWD, the 350e is FWD, and the 500e is AWD.
Do not treat an IS grade and an ES grade as direct equivalents. The lines differ in size, intended character and available powertrains, so compare the specific configurations that meet your needs rather than matching trim names.

Rear-seat space and passenger needs
The ES is the more natural place to start if adults will regularly ride in back. Lexus’s 2026 redesign information says the ES grew 6.5 inches in overall length and gained 3.1 inches of wheelbase, with more rear-seat room. Those figures describe the 2026 redesign context; they are not an independently measured head-to-head comparison with the 2027 IS.
Lexus says an Executive Package remains available on the 2027 ES 350e Luxury. It includes power-adjustable, heated, ventilated and massaging rear outboard seats and a passenger ottoman. The feature list is specific to that package and configuration; confirm availability on the exact car. Lexus’s 2026 ES redesign announcement explains the size and rear-seat changes.

Hybrid, electric range and charging fit
ES 350h hybrid
The 350h combines a gasoline engine with Lexus’s sixth-generation hybrid system. Lexus lists 244 net combined horsepower and EPA-estimated fuel economy of 46 mpg combined with FWD or 44 mpg combined with AWD for the 2027 model year. It is the ES choice for shoppers who want a hybrid without making routine plug-in charging part of ownership.
ES 350e and 500e battery-electric models
The 350e uses a single motor and FWD; the 500e uses dual motors and AWD. Lexus lists system output of 221 hp and EPA-estimated range of 307 miles for the 350e, and 338 hp and 276 miles for the 500e. Both 2027 BEVs use a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery and a NACS charging port, according to Lexus.

Before choosing an EV, consider whether you can charge where the car is parked and whether public charging works for your regular routes. Range is an EPA estimate, and actual range varies with conditions and use. Lexus’s release describes the battery and port but does not establish your local charger availability or the time a particular charging session will take; check those against your home, routes and the specific vehicle.
IS 350
The 2027 U.S. IS lineup is V6-only: Lexus lists no IS hybrid or battery-electric model. If avoiding gasoline or maximizing fuel economy is central to the decision, the ES lineup offers choices the IS does not.

Price, grades and equipment: compare like with like
Lexus announced a $47,545 starting MSRP for the 2027 IS 350 line. Its 2027 ES release lists a $47,610 base MSRP specifically for the ES 350e, not for every ES powertrain. These are different model lines and, in the ES case, a specific EV variant; they are not a like-for-like trim-price comparison. The release said the 350e was expected to arrive at dealerships in September 2026, but that announcement does not establish current inventory.
The 2027 IS is offered in F SPORT Design and F SPORT grades. Lexus’s 2027 ES lineup spans 350h, 350e and 500e configurations, with equipment varying by version and package. Compare the same model year, drivetrain, grade, option packages and dealer-installed items before judging the actual price. Local availability and final transaction prices depend on the vehicle and dealer.
For context only, Lexus’s 2026 IS page listed a starting price of $46,895, while its 2026 ES page displayed a $48,895 starting price across that line. Those are 2026 page figures, not a matched 2027 comparison. Lexus’s IS release and ES release provide the cited 2027 pricing details.
Displays and safety-system generation
Lexus’s 2027 descriptions identify different technology generations: the IS has Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 and a 12.3-inch interface display, while the ES has Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, a 14-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver display. Verify the equipment on the particular trim and vehicle; a model-wide description alone does not establish that every feature is standard on every configuration.

How to decide which Lexus sedan to test-drive
- Decide on the powertrain first. Pick the IS if you want its V6 and RWD/AWD choice. Pick the ES if you want a hybrid or a battery-electric option.
- Think about who rides in back. If rear-seat comfort is a frequent need, start with the larger ES and check the specific trim and package. If you rarely carry rear passengers and prefer the IS’s sport-oriented brief, include the IS on your list.
- For an ES EV, map charging around your real routine. Check home-charging feasibility and the public charging options on routes you use; an EPA range estimate by itself cannot answer whether charging will be convenient for you.
- Compare actual cars, not just model names. Match model year, drivetrain, grade and options, then verify current local inventory and the equipment installed on the vehicle.
- Drive the configurations you are considering. Lexus’s descriptions explain the intended character, but the evidence here is not a hands-on comparison. A test drive can help you judge ride, response, seating and visibility for yourself.
