Lexus ES production at Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky, plant was scheduled to end by the close of 2025. The ES itself was not discontinued: Lexus says its 2026 ES 350e, ES 500e and ES 350h are assembled in Japan at Toyota Motor Kyushu.
What “U.S. production is over” means
The change is about where the Lexus ES is assembled, not whether Lexus still sells the sedan. Toyota Motor Credit Corporation’s quarterly presentation says ES production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK) would cease “by end of 2025.” Lexus’s March 18, 2026 release identifies Toyota Motor Kyushu in Japan as the assembly site for the 2026 ES lineup.
The available company information gives the cutoff as the end of 2025; it does not establish the date of the final Kentucky-built ES. It also does not state why Toyota ended production there, so claims about demand, tariffs, jobs, labor or factory capacity are not established by these announcements.
How the ES came to be built in Kentucky
2013: Toyota announced the plan
On April 19, 2013, Toyota announced that it would add ES 350 production at its Georgetown, Kentucky, plant, with production planned to begin in 2015. Toyota described it as the first time a Lexus would be produced in the United States. The company projected that the plan would produce about 50,000 Lexus vehicles a year; that was a forecast, not a confirmed final production total or an annual figure for the full run. Toyota’s 2013 announcement quoted then-president Akio Toyoda: “Lexus was founded in the United States, so it is only fitting that we are bringing the production of luxury sedans for our U.S. customers back to where the brand was born.”

2015: U.S. Lexus production began
Toyota reported on October 19, 2015, that Lexus production had begun at Georgetown, calling the ES 350 the first Lexus produced in the United States. Toyota’s production-start announcement marks the start of the Kentucky-built ES era.
By the end of 2025: Kentucky production was to cease
Toyota Motor Credit Corporation’s quarterly presentation states that Lexus ES production at TMMK would cease by the end of 2025. The presentation establishes the planned timing, but does not provide a separate explanation for the decision. Toyota Financial’s quarterly presentations

2026: The ES continues, assembled in Japan
In a release dated March 18, 2026, Lexus said Toyota Motor Kyushu in Japan assembles the 2026 ES 350e, ES 500e and ES 350h. The lineup includes two battery-electric models and a hybrid. Lexus’s 2026 ES announcement

What the announcements do—and do not—tell buyers
They establish a change in assembly location and a different 2026 powertrain lineup. They do not establish that the move changed the ES’s quality, price, availability or parts support. Nor do they explain the business rationale for ending Kentucky production. Those questions should not be answered by assuming that a change in assembly country proves a change in vehicle quality or ownership costs.
