2006 and 2012: generation numbering needs context
Lexus sources do not use one consistent generation label for this transition. Lexus USA’s corporate chronology calls the 2006 ES 350 and first ES 300h hybrid sixth-generation models. What changed in the seventh-generation U.S. ES
2019: new chassis and first F SPORT
Lexus identified the 2019 U.S. ES as the seventh generation. The redesign brought an all-new chassis and a more dynamic exterior, while F SPORT made its first appearance in the ES range. Lexus described the 2024 U.S. changes as minor. What is new for the 2026 eighth-generation ES?
Lexus unveiled the eighth-generation ES in April 2025 as a multi-platform model with hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. Lexus called it “the first Lexus core model to be re-imagined as a multi-platform vehicle, offered with hybrid and BEV powertrains.” That is Lexus’ description of its product strategy, not an independent assessment. In March 2026, Lexus said the U.S. ES 350e and ES 500e battery-electric models would arrive ahead of the ES 350h hybrid. The 350e is front-wheel drive; the 500e is all-wheel drive. How to compare Lexus ES model years
Start with the specific car, not just the generation label. A used ES’ equipment and powertrain depend on its market, model year, grade, and configuration.
- Confirm market and model year. A calendar-year launch, a U.S. model-year designation, and another country’s sales timing are not interchangeable.
- Identify the powertrain and driven wheels. The nameplate includes gasoline, hybrid, and—starting with the 2026 generation—battery-electric versions. FWD and AWD availability varies by model and market.
- Check grade-specific equipment. F SPORT, safety features, multimedia, packages, and wheel options can be limited to particular years or trims.
