Lewis Hamilton commissioned British motorsport artist Paul Oz to paint a portrait of him in a Mercedes car as a farewell gift to the team’s employees. Oz said that prints went to 3,000 Mercedes GP employees; the original painting is displayed at Mercedes’ Brackley site.
What was Hamilton’s gift?
It was a commissioned artwork, not a car or cash gift. The portrait shows Hamilton in a Mercedes and was created by British motorsport artist Paul Oz. PlanetF1 reported the details in February 2025, quoting Oz’s Instagram post; the 3,000-recipient figure is Oz’s account, rather than a number independently confirmed in Mercedes’ official farewell material.
Why the portrait shows Monaco 2019
Oz said his brief was to focus on the car rather than Hamilton. He chose an image inspired by the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, held days after Niki Lauda died. Mercedes raced with a red halo in tribute to Lauda, and Hamilton took pole position before dominating the race, according to PlanetF1’s report.
“My only remit was that I should focus on the car rather than Lewis, and so I chose to paint an image from Monaco 2019, just a few days after Niki Lauda passed and the team ran a red halo to remember Niki.”

Oz’s post, as quoted by PlanetF1, said: “No prints are commercially available sorry.” The original painting hangs at Mercedes’ Brackley site, while the employee prints were reportedly not offered for sale. That describes the artist’s statement reported in February 2025; it does not establish their availability today.
The gift marked the end of Hamilton’s Mercedes partnership
Formula 1 announced on 1 February 2024 that Hamilton would leave Mercedes for Ferrari after the 2024 season, with the move taking effect for 2025. Mercedes’ farewell account described 12 seasons together and framed the departure as the end of a highly successful partnership. At that point, the team listed Hamilton’s Mercedes-era record as 245 races, 84 wins, 78 pole positions and 153 podium finishes, alongside eight Constructors’ titles and six Drivers’ titles.
