What happened outside the Las Vegas hotel?

One person in the truck died. Seven other people were reported to have minor injuries. The Associated Press reported that the hotel sustained virtually no damage.
Who was driving the Cybertruck?
Authorities initially said the driver’s identity was not confirmed because the body had been burned beyond recognition. They later identified him as Matthew Alan Livelsberger using identification evidence and DNA and dental confirmation, according to the January 2025 briefings reported by CBS News.

Authorities said Livelsberger had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head before the vehicle detonated. That finding concerns the circumstances of his death; it does not explain what ignited the materials in the truck or establish the cause of the explosion.
Did the Cybertruck catch fire or explode?
Both occurred, but the sequence matters: authorities described an explosion followed by fire. The early public accounts did not establish that the vehicle itself spontaneously caught fire or that a vehicle defect caused the explosion. Investigators reported finding explosive and combustible materials in the truck bed, while the ignition method was initially unknown.

What did investigators find in the truck bed?
At a January 2025 briefing, officials said the truck bed contained gasoline canisters, camp fuel canisters and large firework mortars. Those reported contents help explain why the event involved an explosion and fire, but the initial accounts did not say exactly how the materials were ignited. The presence of the materials alone does not establish a vehicle malfunction.
Was the explosion connected to the New Orleans attack?
In a FOX5 Vegas interview published January 27, 2025, FBI Las Vegas Special Agent in Charge Spencer Evans said investigators had found no connection between Livelsberger and the attacker in New Orleans. Evans said there were no telephone or electronic communications between the men and no evidence they knew each other. He also said investigators had found no connection to international terrorism or ISIS.

Evans said the domestic-terrorism classification remained undetermined. That is distinct from the physical findings about the explosion and from investigators’ assessment of Livelsberger’s apparent intent. The interview does not establish whether a later final report or closure announcement was issued.

As of Evans’s January 27 interview, investigators were still seeking clarity about Livelsberger’s motive and had electronic devices left to examine. Evans described the difficulty of the inquiry this way: “The challenging part of this investigation is that you get so much conflicting information.” He also said: “We haven’t seen at this point that there was anyone else involved beside him.” These were statements about the investigation at that time, not a later final determination.

The Associated Press reported that a note attributed to Livelsberger said: “This was not a terrorist attack, it was a wake up call. Americans only pay attention to spectacles and violence. What better way to get my point across than a stunt with fireworks and explosives,” The wording is the note’s reported content; it is not, by itself, an independently verified account of motive or the FBI’s conclusion.
